I've found that if you mix them, they'll pick out what they like and leave the rest. If you're switching from one of the top four brands to another in the group: KM, Oxbow, Sweet Meadow or Mazuri 566, I'd mix them in. If you're switching from another brand to one of the four I mentioned, I'd dump the old stuff and switch cold turkey. The sooner you get them off the junky stuff, the better.

I'm currently trying to figure out if Whistles is having a hard time eating his KMS hay in the rack or if he just doesn't really like it :/
He seems to be eating what isn't in the hay rack, but isn't touching or barely touching what is in the hay rack.

So he eats the same hay that's in the rack, once it falls out of the rack? He must not like eating from a hayrack.

    it doesn't fall out
I'm using a grid held in an angle from the wall. That is my hay rack.
I've seen him eat very little from the hay rack. I had put down his original hay bowl(big dog dish) and he seems to be eating from that. Still seems like he isn't eating as much as he should.
Feels like he ate more oxbow than he is with KMS :/

MrWhistles, can you post a picture of your hay rack? If the holes in the rack aren't large enough for them to get their noses through and get the hay, they can't eat it. I've thrown out a couple of racks that people have given me to try because the pigs couldn't get enough hay.

sry about the horrible quality. I used one of those grids you use to make the cages
As you see, he's up there/laying under the rack, he doesn't appear to be eating from it tho.

Try turning the hay so it sticks out through the holes. He can't reach anything except at the very edges.

I put my hay in corner plastic litter boxes. They eat out of it like a pig trough. One of mine jumps right in. if you've ever seen a guinea pig roll in the hay, you wouldn't want to deprive them of that simple pleasure.

Maybe he just has to get used to the new hay. Did you try mixing the Oxbow and KMS together and see if he would eat it that way? Then just slowly wean him off the Oxbow by putting less of it in the mix every time you fill the tack

we we're completely out of oxbow when KMS came in
and he took the switch from kaytee to oxbow just fine
so i didnt think it would make too much of a difference between oxbow and KMS

Maybe he got used to the Oxbow right away because it's better quality than the Kaytee brand. And maybe he just needs to get used to the KMS because it's one of the best quality brands(is what someone told me). Or maybe he doesn't like KMS as much as the Oxbow

I agree with you on that. I went with KMS because a lot of people on here say it's great and the other reason was because Oxbow is much more expensive than KMS.
