    My lil sow is pregnant

I was just wondering so when her pups arrive and they've reached sexual maturity and all and have to be separated from their mum. Is there a safe way to house boars together? I was thinking that is might be possible since they will be younger and their cage is away from the sows I just need some answers so i know what to do when they are ready :/

Re: My lil sow is pregnant

If you don't mind me asking, how did she get pregnant? When she'll deliver depends on when she was last with a boar. Guinea pigs pregnancies generally last 60-75 days. You have to separate males at three weeks, or you'll end up with more pregnant pigs. Yes, it's a myth boars won't live together. As long as they have enough room, they'll be fine. A 2X4 at least, and you shouldn't have problems. Good luck!

Oh my gosh thanks! :3 this helps a lot and at the time we had them separated by a little barrier until the new cage came in and when i cam home one day they had chewed through it :/ so it was a complete accident but I'm still glad to have the bubs on the way :)

Ooops. Just make sure to separate the males at 3 weeks. And don't forget to post pics! Good luck.

Re: My lil sow is pregnant

How old is your sow? The delivery can be dangerous if she's over 8 months old and has never delivered a litter before. I'm not sure of the exact process, but I think it's something to do with the pelvic ligament tightening so it can't loosen up and let the bones get in position for delivery, making a C-section necessary.

I know what you mean about chewing. I have a boar who's going to be neutered and a sow. They live next door to each other in separate cages, so there's no way they can get to each other, but every now and then Borat chews and tests the bars anyway. I'm guessing it's when Amy is in heat.

Hopefully she's young enough for a safe delivery. Definitely post pigtures when the new arrivals come!

My mother is biting her bubs :(

Well i figured out just tonight that it wasn't the other bubs nipping his face it was actually their mother. I wasnt expecting this but I witnessed her nip all of her babies we think it's because they need more room but are not sure because they are only 2 weeks old almost 3 and we are very worried because the little runt of the litter is taking the brunt of it too his face and if there is any way to help this settle down it will be gladly appreciated :)

Are they eating solid food and drinking from the bottle? If so, I'd separate them from the mom if you feel they are at risk. You can always supplement with hand feeding or syringe feeding if you need to.

Separate the pups from the mother. At two weeks, they'll likely do fine.

How large is the cage? And how many pigs are in it?

How much room do they have? Guinea pigs in crowded conditions often start chewing on the babies' ears.

Is there another thread about this?

If they're almost 3 weeks, the male(s) can be separated from the female(s) since they should be separated at 3 weeks of age, anyway.

Re: My lil sow is pregnant

I merged your three threads together.

I see you have a 2x3--this can seem a bit crowded to a mom with three youngsters. Maybe the mom is feeling overwhelmed, especially if the little boys are attempting to mount her. You might want to take out the bigger two babies and leave the runt with the mom to see if she calms down. It might benefit him to have extra time with her.

It would be very unusual for a mom to actually wound a baby. Moms nip their babies all the time without causing actual wounds. Are you sure there's not something else going on?

Suzi actually bit her son Einstein a few times and yanked out his hair. He was also the runt and he was very needy, wanting to nurse every second he could. Sometimes she would yell and run away when he would mob her for milk.

    What color is the baby?

From what I understand the runt is a boy. He probably shouldn't be left with his mom much longer, or else he could impregnate her.

If you're really confused and you cannot figure it out, you probably should take them to the vet to get a professional opinion, and it couldn't hurt to get them all checked out to make sure they're okay.

Or you could also post a picture and have the people on here help you figure it out. :)
