Re: Let's see your cage Pictures please.

I am still fairly new to the life of a GP mommy but I have fallen so in love with my boys, Spaz and Brownie, and I want to care for them well. I plan to get a C&C but for now I have the Midwest Guinea Pig Habitat plus an extra area that I created. The inside living area is about 23"x47" (this is just over the required 7.5 square feet required) plus another 23"x16" in the extra room. I would love ideas or feedback for improvement! Right now I have the extra room covered and have a hut in there. The boys like to cuddle in there. They run around in the open area. I have the hay up in the rack but I wonder if it's too hard to get. They reach it fine but they did go through more hay before I had the rack and just had it on the ground.

    Some questions:
    1. Is the hay rack I made ok?
    2. Should I keep the added room as a covered hideout or uncover it and make it a kitchen area? If so, would the hay rack go there too?
    3. Should they have more stuff or is open space better?
    4. Any other ideas or suggestions?

    1. I would suggest covering the ends of the hay rack with cardboard or coroplast or something so the pigs can't get up in there and potentially injure themselves.

    2. Personally, I would prefer having that part be the kitchen so they can have the whole rest of the cage to run and play. The hay rack would go in the kitchen, along with the water bottle and possible the food dish.

    3. Open space is better as long as they each have somewhere to hide. You don't want to clutter up the cage, but you can add a few things if you want to.

    4. Since the cage is on the small size for boys, I would get rid of the plastic hidey and replace it with something they can run through, like a fleece forest or a tunnel. You really want to maximize the space for lap-running, plus having multiple entrances and exits on each hidey goes a long way towards keeping the peace between the piggies.

@pigger123 I have covered it with coroplast, and moved the water bottle to the other side!

Been a long while since I've been here.
My girls are still in a 3x3 and Oly still has yet to grow out of jumping onto the cage. So the lid remains. I've also started using the guinea pigs' floor pin around the cage. It's surprisingly an effective barrier in keeping Oly from jumping onto the cage. I always worry about him hurting his growing bones.

Thank you so much for the input. I made a few changes already so will post new pics soon for more feedback. It really means a lot to get input because I really want to do good by them!

Here's my 2x6 C&C cage with a kitchen that I just finished. Now all I need is fleece, finish making a hay rack and of course the piggies! Click image for larger version.

But it has remained the same for almost 7 weeks, so I think it's safe to say this is how it will be until the summer. It's a 4x3 for two boars, with a plexiglass front. I would never go back to not having this plexiglass there, it's so fantastic! Their cage is currently decked out for Christmas, and since this is our first Christmas with the pigs, they have lots under the tree this year haha

So their cage has a bunch of different chews, including giant seagrass balls, which are their favourites. They just got a pigwam, which has been a massive hit. The red snowflake tunnel is something I made, with the outer layer being flannel print and the inner layers are 2 fleece and one u haul. It's gone ever very well They have a few different cuddle cups that I alternate between, this is the only one I didn't make. And then they have various toys and chews They have christmas lights, decorations, and of course stockings Hope you folks like it

Then in the new year they will be getting these!! Aren't they just lovely?!

Wow!!! I love those! Do you follow instructions on making those because they are so amazing!

I moved the hay rack to the new "kitchen" area and am making ends for it now. I keep imagining Spaz climbing up there and getting hurt so I'm glad you pointed that out. He likes to climb on things.

I also moved the lid to the other end to still have a darker area since they like to cuddle in a covered area.

I was thinking about tieing strips of fleece to the lid to make a forest area but wonder if I should make it go all the way across or only half way across and then more strips going back essentially making a square in one corner.

    What do you think?

@blessedmom It looks really good! Either fleece forest version would be fun, but the one with a more enclosed corner would offer extra privacy for the pigs, and would function more as a hideout instead of just a thing to run through.
