I use a shower curtain. I had to literally build my cage on a moment's notice so I had no time to find coroplast. I planned to but I still haven't and the shower curtain does it's job. I'm starting to crave a lift out box though.

I revamped my cage last night, moving the ramp and using pipes as a support for the loft instead of a grid. I like it so much more and so do the piggies.

What kinda pipes are those? Where did you get them?

They were actually spare parts to a cat hideout thing I got at walmart and they just happened to be a perfect fit. I've seen people use pvc pipes cut to size and then cut a few notches so the wires from the above grids fall into them and make them more secure.

Thank you for your reply! I've been looking to see what other materials there are for the base and when I saw it was different I had to ask.

I cut the grids down to use, then I sanded the rough edges so they weren't sharp. I used a drimel type tool.

How did you support the loft areas? Were zip ties enough to keep it sturdy?
I used heavy metal closet shelving supports to hold the front up so I didn't have to have it enclosed. The zip ties are stronger than the connectors and don't come apart so they work well.

Eta: oh you mean the mini loft areas.. Yeah the zip ties were plenty to hold them up. When they get super excited and bounce around the mini loft areas shake a bit but nothing terrible. :)

DSCI0112.jpgDSCI0114.jpgDSCI0115.jpgMy 4 boys have taken over our dinning room and the 2 girls I'm fostering are upstairs in the office. I can't take credit for the girls 2nd level they came with their cage, but I did add the hot pink fleece which my 5 year old grandaughter insisted they would be happerier with:D. Here are a few pictures taken this morning:

Just finished it up last night and moved the girls in. They were immediately happier and running around and popcorning. They seem to love it. I'm really happy with how it turned out too. Couldn't have done it without the knowledge from this site.
Your cage is beautiful!:) I do have one question though: how on earth do you get the top off? I am moving into a home with a dog, she's peaceful, but I'd really like a top on the girls for my own peace of mind. I wanted to do the same sort of design, but I'm worried the top may cave in, or cleaning will be awful. Any feedback?

My first c&c cage, fresh built tonight. It's nothing special but I'm very proud of it and all it means to the girls :)

I change my cage about every 3-6months and have had C&C cages for 3 years. Do you REALLY want to see all my designs?

Very first C&C!
P1020608.jpg

HATED it! I couldn't crawl in and clean it well, couldn't see or play with the piggies easily.

Second cage (the ramo inside was different and so were the levels)

Still hated it!

Then I made a 3 level cage (each level had a differnt group/pig).

Still didn't like it. (Can only add 3 pics at a time but I'll keep adding)

So then I made an openish 4x4 cage:

Hated walking in it to clean it! YUCK! Plus my toddler (at the time) was getting more nimble and curious.

So onto my 2x12!!! Yes 2x12!

I swept it daily and I changed the fleece once a week. Sweeping took about 30 minutes and changing the fleece and scrubbing the coro and restocking hay bins and water bottles about 60-70 minutes. It housed 6-10 guinea pigs at various times as that was a terrible city where people threatened to feed the guinea pigs to their dogs or throw them in a dumpster. There were so many free guinea pigs that guinea pigs with health or behavioural issues were difficult to rehome. So I took them in. Until I had my (now ex) husband arrested for throwing our 15 month old son, 3 year old son, and punching me. I live in a much smaller apt now and had to rehome the nicer pigs and 3 passed from a mysterious illness. It was a hard spring, summer and fall for my family that year. But that was almost 2 years ago now. Things are a little better...
