I revamped my cage last night, moving the ramp and using pipes as a support for the loft instead of a grid. I like it so much more and so do the piggies.
What kinda pipes are those? Where did you get them?

They were actually spare parts to a cat hideout thing I got at walmart and they just happened to be a perfect fit. I've seen people use pvc pipes cut to size and then cut a few notches so the wires from the above grids fall into them and make them more secure.

I'll eventually convince my husband that we can go bigger, but for now this is our setup.

Thank you for your reply! I've been looking to see what other materials there are for the base and when I saw it was different I had to ask.

I love the little lofts you have set up! Where did you find the mini grids?!

I cut the grids down to use, then I sanded the rough edges so they weren't sharp. I used a drimel type tool.

I suspect that they are just cut out of the regular grids. The openings appear to be the same size as the 14" grids. Maybe yes, maybe no?

I bought a light-weight bolt cutter and cut some grids for bunk beds (got rid of them), a custom loft, and making a door in a grid for the loft. Only problem is that the cut grids don't fit into the connectors very well and you have to rely on zip ties to bind them together. Also, I had to Dremel the cut edges to file them down so as to avoid any accidents.

How did you support the loft areas? Were zip ties enough to keep it sturdy?

I used heavy metal closet shelving supports to hold the front up so I didn't have to have it enclosed. The zip ties are stronger than the connectors and don't come apart so they work well.

Eta: oh you mean the mini loft areas.. Yeah the zip ties were plenty to hold them up. When they get super excited and bounce around the mini loft areas shake a bit but nothing terrible.

I can't take credit for the girls 2nd level they came with their cage, but I did add the hot pink fleece which my 5 year old grandaughter insisted they would be happerier with. Here are a few pictures taken this morning:

Your cage is beautiful! I do have one question though: how on earth do you get the top off? I am moving into a home with a dog, she's peaceful, but I'd really like a top on the girls for my own peace of mind. I wanted to do the same sort of design, but I'm worried the top may cave in, or cleaning will be awful. Any feedback?

My first c&c cage, fresh built tonight. It's nothing special but I'm very proud of it and all it means to the girls

I change my cage about every 3-6months and have had C&C cages for 3 years. Do you REALLY want to see all my designs?

    Very first C&C!

HATED it! I couldn't crawl in and clean it well, couldn't see or play with the piggies easily.

Second cage (the ramo inside was different and so were the levels)

    Still hated it!

Then I made a 3 level cage (each level had a differnt group/pig).

Still didn't like it. (Can only add 3 pics at a time but I'll keep adding)

So then I made an openish 4x4 cage:

Hated walking in it to clean it! YUCK! Plus my toddler (at the time) was getting more nimble and curious.

So onto my 2x12!!! Yes 2x12!

OMG! How long does it take you to clean it/how often??? And I thought it took a long time to clean my 2x5 with 2x2 loft...
