So about an hour ago (around 11pm) I was in my room, and I heard this noise that sounded like a bird, and it was chirping really fast. I thought it was coming from my parents room, across from my room, but it was actually coming from the other side of the house! That's how loud it was. I heard my sister shout that a bird was in the guinea pig cage, so I run over to the piggies cage, and I see snowtoes in his little house, Bubbles in the hay, both of them looking very alert, and then little rosie in the log house, eyes wide, and I realized the chirping was coming from her! I had never seen her eyes so wide!! I pet her and calmed her down, and she made a faint, almost chirping whistling sound. She's sleeping right now. I think she was a bit stressed, because snowtoes and her did get into a little fight where he pulled out some of her hair, leaving her absolutely petrified in the corner of the cage for about half an hour. I read a bit about chirping, but can someone tell me what they know? And will she be alright tonight? I don't think I'll be able to sleep if I don't know that's she'll be okay.

Well I've read some where that their piggie was chirping after he got into a nasty fight with 2 other pigs ganging up on him, so she analyzed that it could be a cry for help or something. But I've also read somewhere that they may just do this out of the blue because one of her pig's was chirping after having a very good salad. I've never personally experineced this but I think Snowshoe will be just fine =)

Chirping is normal, and your pig is fine. Some chirp and some don't, so just enjoy the one you have. I get long serenades from one of mine every few days, and it's not in response to any stress -- she just likes to sing ;-)

I have read all different kinds of reasons for their piggies chirping ! Stories upon stories on here and cavyspirit.com mentions it...I have come to the conclusion myself that they chirp for a number of reasons.

1. In the wild, it was noted as a "warning" signal to the other pigs that danger was close by.
2. On Cavy Spirit they mention that these chirping sounds are a sign of loneliness.
3. I have heard many say that they believe that their piggies chirping is out of joy and just desires to sing !

So, I believe it can mean many different things ! I have only had my two girls for 3 months, and would love to hear such a pretty "canary like" chirping song coming from them.

Do you think you could record her if it happens again ? We would all LOVE to hear it too ! I think she is fine, I have never heard it equated with a piggie being sick, so I don't think there is anything to worry about. But you know your piggie best. If her eyes looked wide and scared like, maybe she was feeling threatened by her cage mate, you know ?

kathlaaron, if you google "guinea pig sounds" (without the quotes), there are several chirping recordings online.

VJ and I always like to say that they are calling the mothership when they chirp. No one knows the true reason why they do it. But to have a pig that is a true chirper, one should consider themselves very lucky. I've had 2. My current piggie is a chirper. She doesn't do it often though.

When they are chirping they go into a trance like state and it's best to leave them alone until they are done as not to scare them out of the trance.

I love going on youtube and searching guinea pig noises... They are SOO cute and my piggies are SOO quiet. I had a foster that would wheeek up a storm and get the rest riled up. The neighbors a few doors down actually could hear them. They thought I had birds...

hello every1 now i no this is a old discussion but i would to reply as im new to this only signed up yesterday but i have a far few guineas and have herd the chirping sound quite alot. ive also read in a book that ts a sign of stress or the guinea may feel threatend but my guineas live in a stress free enviroment and theirs no need for them to feel threatend. i just put it down as singing as they have made the sound in their hutches and in the run on the grass so personally i think its a happy sound.i have recorded one of my guineas making this sound yesterday but i dnt no how to download it on here as im new to this nd still learning the ropes x

None of the guinea pigs I have now are chirpers but I have a had a few in the past that were chirpers. It seemed to me that the chirping was a warning to the other guinea pigs. In every case, they chirped the first time after being startled. The first time I heard it, it was in the middle of the night, something fell and the sound of the chirping woke us up. It sounded like a bird was loose in the house. That guinea pig continued to chirp on and off for the rest of her life, although after the initial time, it no longer seemed to be a warning but just when she felt like doing it. She had the pretties chirping sound. It sounded like a singing canary. The others sounded more like regular chirping. I attached a video of another one that had a regular chirp. This video was taken in 2008, before I had a coroplast cage so I hope that's not a problem. It was evening and I went into the kitchen which startled her. She started to chirp so I ran to get my camera. It was the only time I recorded any of them. I hope this works:

That did work Pinky !! My Busy does that and it wakes us up. Not often, but on occasion. She is the only pig of my four that also goes into a "trance". I worry about her, but guess it is a common behavior for a few guinea pigs.

The one I had that "sang" would really be in a trance. I regret not videotaping her. Her mouth never moved when she chirped but we could see movement in her throat. She would sit there and just sing away while the others would sit perfectly still. That's why I suspected she was telling them to be on guard. I think it's a special treat if you have one that chirps.

I did the same thing the day mine chirped! I had the window open and thought there was a bird outside my window! Then I remembered that guinea pigs can chirp but i thought it was rare so that is why I didn't think of it right away! Ha ha
yeah mine seem to do it in the morning or when it is completely dark in my room. It is weird cause my other three(who are noisy) don't make a sound when the other is chirping. I haven't pin pointed exactly who it is yet, but I have a good idea. I do love it when they chirp though and if I hadn't researched it before hand I would have thought something was wrong too!

I remember one day I heard chirping and thought it must be a bird. I couldn't tell if a guinea pig did it. Then at 6:00 one morning, I heard chirping. It was very fast and lasted a long time. I glanced over at Mama and Butters, it wasn't them. I waited a minute then looked at the girls cage. It was Pixie. Of course she stopped when she saw me. I heard a couple chirps a couple weeks ago, but that was it.

Twinkie is the only guinea pig I ever adopted as a baby. Her parents were turned over to our rescue and her mother was either pregnant or had just had babies. Her father was a huge teddy and her mother was an abby. She had really wavy fur as a baby. As she got older, she looked more abby. She was really pretty; she was a Lilac. Her skin was a beautiful pink and she had reds, oranges and tans hues in her fur and really deep red eyes.....

To add the link, I brought up the video and highlighted the address bar. I clicked edit, copy and then put my cursor in the comment box and pressed edit, paste.
