I was thinking that santa will bring the girls a chia pet so they could eat the grass. But I want to make sure that this is safe for them to eat. Is it?

Must be everyone is considering the same thing. The chias in the shape of presidents heads are just so... well... bizarre, that I must buy some as gifts !

I don't know if the pottery would be safe for them to chew on. I think you'd have to figure out what it's made of. You have to soak the pottery and keep it wet for the seeds to germinate. There's not a lot of grass on it so it wouldn't last long. If you want to feed them grass, you'd probably be better off growing it in a pot with soil that would continue growing if they eat it off or once you trim it.

I don't think you'd get enough to make it worth the trouble. If your intention is to offer the grass as a snack, there's not much on it. If it's for the cuteness factor, it is a novelty. I've had chia pets before and potted grass. You get much more grass in pots and it grows back quickly. The chia pets just have a fine layer of grass since the seeds sit right on the clay pottery without any soil.

Well I just didn't know how they work. Now that you told me that they sit on top of the clay pot I have to wounder if the chemicals from the pot get into the grass. I will have to look into an easy way to grow some grass because I have a black thumb (not green) when it comes to plants.

I have seen Chia Pets for cats, it grows cat grass in a cute little pot. It might be better for guinea pigs then the normal Chia pets.

Lots of drug store chains carry them as seasonal items.

Links are fine. There are just some links we do not allow at all. But a link to a chia pet would be ok as long as it's not on a site that isn't allowed.

Wheatgrass seeds are available from Ebay or health food stores. Easy to grow in any kind of container like a yogurt containers, used McD's coffee cups, or the plastic box mushrooms come in.
