    Re: Skinny pigs!

I have three male skinny pigs.
The major differences are you have to keep their room at a higher temperature than furry pigs.
You have to trim nails more often to rid them of sharp points.
    They poop a lot more.
You have to be careful not to dry their skin out, some people bath them too much. I have yet to bath my pigs.
They need soft bedding, so I use fleece.
You can go into my profile and see all my piggy pictures!

    I have a skinny pig
there basically the same as guinea pigs, except their naked
my skinny sometimes gets dry and the vet recommended bag balm for his skin. Its basically really thick vasaline from the pet store.

You can find them on craigslist, kijiji for around 50 dollars rehoming fee.

Your skinny pigs are very cute!
For some reason, I would like to use fleece but it just doesnt seam...I dont know. It seams like it would get WAYYYYY too messy for me.
Dont they step all over the poop and walk in it and pee and..yuck.
I just dont understand how it stays clean.
I want to use like carefresh type bedding.

    Re: Skinny pigs!

Carefresh is fine but with a decent sized cage is so expensive.
Fleece is great. Fleece doesn't hold water, so urine goes through it down into the other layer, which I had mattress pads under it. That soaks up the urine.
I have piggybedspreads right now which are awesome.
They don't step in their poops much because you just scoop/sweep them up a couple times a day. I also have litter boxes that collect a lot of poop and pee.

How do you know this for a fact?
Have you checked all the kijiji adds for Skinny Pigs?
I'm not even in the States, so I don't think that is a fair thing to say that the Skinny Pigs on Kijiji are all from breeders.

I saw two last month. Both were of male pigs, from a family home, in a petstore cage. They were both over a year old.
I just checked it. I also recently noticed that there is a person in Northbrook, IL that has been listing on Craigslist, saying she is rehoming skinny guinea pigs. I saw her ad and suspected she might be a breeder from what the ad said. I googled skinny pigs and Northbrook and her breeder site photos were identical to her Craigslist ad photos. I sent her a message, asking her where she got them from and she never responded. Her Craigslist ad said something about not expecting them to be rehomed cheaply. It also said her landlord found out she had them and said they had to go. She was listing them, posing as rehoming them to sell them. Very few people rehome skinny pigs but there are tons of breeders out there, trying to sell them.

    Re: Skinny pigs!

The thing about kijiji is that some are breeders some are not, its not against the rules for a breeder to sell.

Is there even a kijiji in the US? I thought it was a canadian site?

ETA: I don't think its right that you are trying to back up what you just said, with posts that were not from kijiji, they are from craiglist. They are two ery different sites.

I personally didn't get my pigs from kijiji, but I almost did, but, I adopted from the SPCA rather than kijiji, because kijiji had no males.

    Re: Skinny pigs!

Just because one person is a breeder, doesn't mean all. If a person can't afford their skinny pig, they are just as likely to rehome as a person with a american or abby pig.

    Re: Skinny pigs!

That doesn't just go for Skinny Pigs. That goes for all pigs.
People always try to "sell" their babies that have been bred.
Doesn't mean that all Skinny Pig ads are from breeders however.
People get them and don't realize just like furry pigs how much work they are, so they want to rehome them.

    Thanks for all the comments.

Anything else I should know about skinny pigs? behavior? health?
DO they live just as long as guinea pigs with fur? are they just as healthy? how did the hairless kind actually come along?

    Re: Skinny pigs!

    They were lab piggies.
I think now Skinny Pigs with proper care should live just as long as furry pigs.

My point was that many breeders will often try and fool you into thinking they are rehoming. When I checked the site, it linked me to ebay Kijiji and all I could find were breeder ads and not a single skinny pig being rehomed. The Northbrook breeder that listed on Craigslist is currently listed on ebay Kijiji, too. I didn't check the Canadian site and wasn't aware of it until someone mentioned it. There are so many guinea pigs in need of homes, why buy from a breeder?

The posts I checked were ebay kijiji and Craigslist. The only reason I commented was because of the Northbrook IL breeder that placed an ad stating that she was rehoming also sells online as a breeder. I'm sure people list to rehome, too, but some will try and deceive you into thinking they are rehoming for a fee while they continue to breed and sell.

I have seen two two ads for rehomed skinnies recently. One on Chicago Craigslist about a month ago and one on Petfinder in MI. I just think they are such a novelty, they get adopted quickly. I'm sure as time goes on, they will become more common and more will be needing homes.

    Re: Skinny pigs!

Just because that was on one kijiji does not mean all of them. Sometimes all the pigs on CL were from breeders. You just have to watch out and know who your adopting from.
