Never put guinea pigs on a diet, you could take away some fruits and a little less veggies, but its probably fine. How much does your pig weigh? The averages is 2-3 pounds

I believe you can cut back on pellets instead of cutting back on veggies.

well it depends how much veggies you give the pigs too. I mainly meant fruit and maybe a little less parsley. or something of the sort. My pigs all love the pellets.

    Re: Average weight?

Pellets are usually the main cause of overweight pigs. Especially low quality pellets. veggies and hay don't really have much fat to them. Excercise is also important and helps keep them from getting impacted. None of mine are over 2 1/4lbs but it seems I have small pigs. Alot of people have ones 3lbs or more. Weight doesn't really give a good indication of health with guinea pigs.

    Re: Average weight?

My eldest pigs in 2 pounds 11 ounces and just last week he was 2 pounds 8 ounces. I think he was really skinny when he had mites and I just didn't notice, he is putting on weight steadily! My other pigs only gain like an ounce a week. Is it bad that he gains so much weight?

Exercise is important too. Does he get enough floor time? Hay? Also, you're not feeding any nuts or seeds or 'store-bought treats', I assume? Also some types of pellets are more fattening than others. What type of pellets do you feed him?

oxbow pellets. He runs around, not as much as my other pigs because his leg is all screwed up from an accident in his previous home.

He had mites a month ore two ago , could he still be gaining from the weight loss he had during that?

Thats a no to the feeding store bought treats. They have cavy cuisine now (unlimited), and unlimited hay, they also get fresh veggies twice a day (romaine, butter leaf, bell peppers(all colors), parsley, cilantro....a different mix every day...and tomoatoes and carrots once in a while also. They have a big cage, and I've tried floor time and they never run laps.

    Re: Average weight?

LOL. Dagwell, you have not met my Moppy. She is a major runner of any kind. She goes nuts in the cage everyday and she runs from one end of the kitchen to the other during lap time. I swear the other pigs are amazed by her. They just trot along slowly around. The only time I see the others actually run like Moppy is when they are chasing each other.

They have cavy cuisine now (unlimited)
That may be the source of the problem. Unlimited pellets. It's recommended that pigs be fed 1/8 to 1/4 cup per day per pig.

Chewie will run around the cage, but I have never had a pig do it before, its fun to watch him jump over the "obstacles" i.e. his food bowl and cardboard box.

    Re: Average weight?

My boys run like mad men every morning when I come through the dining room to go to work. I make lunches in the kitchen and watch them run lap after lap around the cage. I think they are actually excited to see me. I give them some romaine lettuce leaves before I go. Then, in the evening, late, they get running around like crazy pigs again. They LOVE to chase each other! They almost seem bored by floor time!
