    Question Getting into old age

Smudgee my first guinea pig has celebrated his 5th year with me on the 8th of this month. I purchased him at a pet store when I was 15, before I knew of the risks. Well he's gotten older now, hasn't slowed down, but his condition is deteriorating.

His skin feels really loose, like that of an aged person. I suppose this is probably normal, but is there anything I can do to improve his skin condition?

I have an 8 year old and she does't have baggy skin. I'm not sure what you could do for that, if anything.

Are you weighing him regularly? Has he seen a vet?

That isn't normal, even for seniors. 5 is still on the young side of older age. He may be sick, so it's an illness causing it. How has he been eating?

    Re: Getting into old age

He eats as much as he wants, XZander (6 years old) and Smudgee (5 years old) are on free feed, because they are older, they are on an alfalfa pellet diet. They eat as much hay as they can and still get veggies. Smudgee is just getting older. I don't expect him to make it another 6 months. His eyes are really running too.

I'm away for school, there are no exotics vets within 6 hours, and I have no way of getting him to a vet if I could get to Toronto. I'm determined that it's old age and because he was from a pet store. I have to locate my scale as my mom packed it away when I moved up here.
