    Hat fur

I recently went to a Petco in my area just to look at what they had there, (don't worry, I plan to adopt) and I noticed that a couple pigs had what I would call "hat fur", because the fur on top of their head was flattened so you could see a circle of their skin. I'm just wondering how that happened, and why, if it even means anything at all. I've never seen a cavy on this site with that sort of thing.

I believe those are called "crested" guinea pigs.
    It's just another fur variation.

    Did it look like this?

Hmm, I just googled it and I see that there are crested, but it makes it seem like they only are white crested, and one of the one's I recall was just all red.

I think you'll see more of the white crest using Google because it's the "showing standard," but I could be wrong because I've really got no clue about guinea pig showing. The crests can come in any variation though, just like any other type of fur.

Oh!! I didn't notice you had a link in your post before last. But, yes, that picture in that link looked just like the one I saw in the store. I thought something was wrong with them. I learn something new everyday!

In the US, only crested with a completely white crest can be shown. Anything else is breeding stock or pets. In other countries, those without white in the crest are shown as crested or sometimes called english crested.
