I was looking at a local petstore website...just browsing. They sell collars and leashes for Guinea Pigs. Is this common?

They sell the same thing for rabbit, IMO it is a really bad idea. Floor time is much better. Leashes, run-around-in balls, etc. are best avoided.
You cant get a pig to walk on a leash like you would a dog or even a cat. I bought one, but I never use it. Mine slip out of the harness.
my parents bought me one, they thought it was cute. Its a really bad idea for guinea pigs, it will scare them to death just trying to get it on them, let alone having them try to walk around in it.
LOL, yours slip out? I can't even get mine in!!!!Originally Posted by tashagurl

I tried it with a rabbit at the shelter (I tried it inside first) and he squrmed when he was in. They probably don't feel confertable in them, so I wouldn't try this again.
They can kill pigs. Guinea pigs have very delicate internal structure, and just putting it on induces a lot of stress. NEVER put a leash or collar onto your cavy, as it will just confuse and scare the poor thing. You can easily injure them this way. I think I explained more on another thread, so sorry that I don't have too much time at the moment.
Yes, i have heard of many cavies who have been strangled by the piggy leashes. very sad.
Big ditto to what mncavylover said!
