    Intro and Thanks

I am new to this forum so I'd like to introduce myself and my GPs.
BUT, first I'd like to say that I have learned very much by reading your posts and suffice it to say that I have made some mistakes.
I have learned from them and am making corrections so please don't scold me for what I did.
I bought an abbysinian who I named Maverick (after I found out for myself that he wasn't a she!). My gosh, I bought him from Meijer's. ( I don't believe any superstore, grocerystore, etc. should sell animals at all after what i've learned here). He was in a very small aquarium type cage by himself. The boy who got him out for me did not know anything about GPs and couldn't tell me what the sex was.
That night he seemed lonely and so I decided to go out and get him some special treats and something to play with.
I went to a pet store the next day and there were like 5 or six GPs in a very small cage. I didn't plan on nor do I EVER endorse getting a GP or any pet on the spur of the moment. But I found this abby whose hair was a little longer than Maverick's and satiny.
This I was told was possible male but she wasn't sure. Soon after I brought this one home I placed it in the cage with Maverick. He perked right up started running around and popcorning and squealing. He was very happy to say the least.
I know after reading more after I got them that I did not do things the right way and have a male and a female (Lucy).
After reading what I have read here and seeing the pictures, I am horrified! I am scared because I know Lucy is pregnant and soon to deliver.
Tomorrow, I am buying a separate cage for Lucy.
I am going to separate them and keep them that way.
I have the time and the money to take care of them and will never let this happen again.
But, in a way I am glad I got them because of the conditions they were living in and I know that they are going to get the best care rather than being given to a child or someone irresponsible such as I was who would continue doing to them what I have stopped doing.
Thank you for opening my eyes!

Please let me clarify that I do not endorse buying them from any store or pet store based on what I have learned and seen in this awesome forum!
    Thanks!

Most of us made similar mistakes before finding this forum. Don't be too hard on yourself, we certainly won't if your ready to improve their care and take advice. Welcome to the forum. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Might I suggest that instead of buying a cage for Lucy build her and the male separate C&C cages? Their cheap and easy to build, and they give them the proper amount of room to run around. You could even build a two level cage and keep one on the top and one on the bottom. Here's a page on how to build them: http://www.cavycages.com/howto.htm You can find the cubes at Target they're called Organize-it there. Other places carry them too, but that's where I found them. You can find the coroplast at any local sign store or at Home Depot (though it's more expensive at Home Depot). A 2x3 grid cage is a minimum, but a 2x4 (or larger) is preferred if you have the room!

Welcome! I'm also new to the forum and have made mistakes in the past which were corrected with the wonderful information here. Please follow the advice given by PiggieMom about the C&C cages. There isn't a store-bought cage suitable for our little furry friends. I was able to build my C&C cage in short time and it makes "Piggie" so accessible and easy to take care of. Welcome again!!

Welcome aboard!!! I'm of the mind that as long as you put the time and care into something, it'll always work out!!! So i'm positive your piggies will be great!! I too made a cage for them pretty quickly (just so they have some leg stretching room), it's actually very, very easy to do. Ok, mine was far more expensive then the prices i've seen here, but i seem alergic to doing anything cheaply, so that's my bad. =)

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong - but I do not think you have
to seperate the two of them right now. It might stress them out a bit. But you do have to seperate at 21 days after they are born (the boys from girls) - but until then I think they can live happily together !

I do know that as the date approaches I will need to separate them.
Her sides are bulging out a bit, I can feel them moving around now, but the pelvis isn't separating yet, and that membrane is still there.
I can't remember but I read somewhere about how soon after you start to feel them move they are aproximately due. I'll post pics soon but the cage comes first (hopefully tomorrow). They'll stay together until I start to see the signs but either they have no room in it or she has kicked him out of the pigloo (the largest) cause he's been sleeping clear on the other end!

    Re: Intro and Thanks

Spiffy the reason to separate them before birth is because the male can impregnate her right after the birth of the pups. Then as you know separate the sexes by 21 days if not a few days sooner.
Glad you are with us. I just read your cage post and look forward to seeing your idea when it is complete. C&C cage right?

Please. No sooner than 21 days. Depending on the size and behavior of the male they can go from 3-4 weeks.

Oh T I am so sorry somewhere I thought I read at 21 days the male pups can get the mom pregnant. Thanks for correcting me.

PS: whack me a good one. I think I need it!

Ok correcting this info. The male will need to be separated now, not later as he can backbreed the mother. Anytime a due date on a sow is unknown, it's best to separate because she could give birth sooner than expected and then if the boar backbreeds her, she will have yet another litter and we all don't want that.

    spiffykinkajou,
C&C cages are great for pigs. Each needs at least a 2x3 C&C cage and you could sit them on top of each other if you are low on space. They are cheap and easy to build too. It is true that there are no pet store cages that are big enough to house one guinea pig alone. Once your sow has pups, after 21 days, you can separate any male pups out to live with dad and leave any female pups to live with mom. That way each has company and won't have to live alone. You might want to look over the homepage which is located at www.cavycages.com

    Judy- this one's for you!

    Cute GPs!

I do have to ask thast you not post pictures of your GPs in the gallerues though. The galleries are reserved for photos of cages and accesories only. As cute as yor sweeties are their pictures can't be in the gallery.

They are so cute. Just love them. I looked back in your first post and I don't think you said about how old they are. Do you have an idea?
