Hi from Dave, Kari, Gus and Ernie

    Hello everyone.

We just found this site and decided to say hi after checking it out.

We are a young Canadian couple who are slaves to two boars. I am Dave and my wife is Kari. Gus and Ernie are our boys. We have lived together with the pigs for about a yr. The boys are Kari's first experience in guinea pig husbandry. I have been slave to a few other piggos over the years.

Patricia, Roger and Turbo Pig have all crossed the rainbow bridge. My mum has Piglette who used to live with me.

I hope to learn more about pigs here and hopefully meet some interesting slaves and share some good stories and pigtures.

Hi Dave, it's nice to meet you. I would also like some pictures of your piggers.

There is lots to learn on this forum. You should start by reading the full site of www.cavycages.com and make your piggies a proper cage. Mine cost $35 Canadian, I found the cubes at Wal-Mart and the coroplast at Loomis. A tupperware bin, regardless of its size, is too small for your pigs to run around and play, and provides improper ventilation which could lead to respiratory problems .

Are you a member of guinealynx? Your pigs names sound familiar to me.

I want to say there is nothing that states what kind of cage Dave's pigs are in . Please don't make assumptions. Just ask what kind of cage they are in instead of assuming they are in a petstore cage.

I think you're right! Your boys are adorable as are you and Kari.

What kind of cage do you have them in? We tend to be insatiable curious about different piggy living conditions, second only to seeing the piggies themselves, and you've already fulfilled that!

That's what it said on his profile, I didn't assume it.

Those are very sweet looking piggies .

Re: Hi from Dave, Kari, Gus and Ernie

They live in a giant rubbermaid/tupperware bin. 38"x21". If I had more romm I'd put them in a kiddie's swimming pool. My mum's pig lives in a round one about 4 feet in diameter and a foot deep.

They have a pigloo that they enjoy. Gus likes to use it as a turtle shell.

The boys like summertime when they can play in the yard. Thier favorite prt of summer is all the dandelion leaves they get to eat.

During the winter they eat a lot of parsley. They love sitting on my lap or on the bed. They enjoy having their house in the computer room, so they see me a lot and get to listen to music with me.

    Dave -
That's still pretty small by the standards we recommend on here. Like nonamian_girl suggested, check out the home page on http://www.cavycages.com for easy instructions to make something a bit larger (30"X36" or 30"X50") for 2 pigs. Are you measuring the inside usable space or the outside of the container?

Now the next question, is are you feeding your two adorable piggies? I highly recommend cilantro over parsley for starters. Parsley is a lot higher in calcium, and might eventually lead to stones.

They get pretty good variety of green stuff. We have tried cilantro in the past but they didn't like it much.

They like fruity stuff too. Strawberry tops(but not the fruit), melon rinds, (watermelon seems to be the only melon they actually eat the 'meat' from), whatever we have, we toss in their house.

Re: Hi from Dave, Kari, Gus and Ernie

What all veggies are you feeding them? It says on your profile you feed them pickles? Is this correct? Pickles are an absolute no-no.

whatever we have, we toss in their house.
Do you mean whatever kind of veggies/fruits you just toss in whenever?

They really need a larger cage. Rubbermaid bins aren't suitable cages.

Nonamian- I hadn't looked at the profile until now but this thread didn't specify what kind of cage. So I am sorry, please accept my apology.

Re: Hi from Dave, Kari, Gus and Ernie

Apology accepted . Oh and Ly, when I mention "the big guy" in my posts, it's just an expression that slips out, I really don't mean anything religious by it. Just thought I'd let you know.

Dave, here is a great list of good foods to feed I've received from other members:

    - Everyday Foods
-Lettuces (should be a staple in any pigs diet) Romaine, Green/Red leaf, Butterhead/Boston, Frisee, Curly Endive, Belgian Endive, Radicchio, salad mix (w/out iceberg lettuce) *Iceberg lettuce should not be given. It can cause diarrhea and has very little nutritional value
    -Cilantro/Chinese Parsley/Coriander greens
    -Swiss Chard, Red Chard
[-Grass-wheat, winter rye (grown in pots from seed), chemical/waste free forage outdoors
-Bell/Sweet Peppers-red, green, yellow, purple (not hot or chili)
-Carrots-1 small/medium baby carrot or equivalent of regular carrot per pig
    -Corn Silks and husks
    -Zucchini
    -Sweet Potato leaves
-Cherry or Grape tomatoes (no more than 1-2 per pig cut in half)

    Every Other Day Foods
-Celery (cut into small pieces, strings removed)
    -Celery leaves
    -Argula
    -Cucumber
-Peas in pods, Pea shoots (not dried)
--Green beans, string beans, snap beans
    -Summer squash
    -Winter squash
-Roma or regular tomatoes (cut into small pieces; leaves are poisonous)
-Yams (not sweet potatoes, there is a difference)
    -Clover
    -Garden cress

    Once or Twice Weekly Foods
    Carrot tops/leaves
    Dandelion greens
    Parsley
    Collard greens
    Mustard greens
    Water cress
    Beet greens
    Spinach
    Kale
Dandelion (stems, flower, even root OK)
    Artichoke
    Asparagus
    Basil
    Dill
    Mint
    Thyme
    Chives (feed in moderation)
Green onions tops (feed in moderation)
Green Leek tops (feed in moderation)
    Sweet onions (feed in moderation)
    Beets
    Turnip

And here's a list Ly posted on another thread about what not to feed:
    Avocado (too high in fat)
Breads, Grains and Cereals (an occasional cheerio is ok)
    Coconut (too high in fat)
    Dry beans and peas
Flowers (commercially grown decorative plants contain preservatives &
    pesticides)
Fried, cooked and otherwise prepared foods
Fruit juices (sugar-free, or unsweetened juices are OK)
Garlic or pungent onions (will not poison pigs, )
Horseradish (leaves probably ok, root too pungent)
    Hot herbs and spices
Hot Peppers / Chiles / Paprikas
Iceburg Lettuce (low nutrition, high water)
Jams, jellies and fruit preserves (too high in sugar)
    Milk and milk products
    Mushrooms
    Nuts (too high in fat)
Peanut butter, cakes, cookies, baked goods
Pickled veggies (dills, capers, sour krauts)
Potatoes (poisonous if green or sprouted) - sweet potatoes / yams are ok
    Rhubarb (poisonous)
    Seeds (choking hazard)
Taro (dangerous if eaten raw / unprepared)
    Teas, coffee, colas
