Hi! Our 5.2 year old piggie (Yancy) was taken to the vet yesterday after showing signs of lethargy, wet chin, and mucousy nose, having small dry stringed together poop, and a puffed appearance. He was prescribed a low dosage of Baytril and was given IV for fluids and a vitamin booster shot I believe. This morning he’s showing more activity and is eating and drinking on his own although a bit slowly (he’s always been a slower eater compared to our other pig and housemate Nibbler!).

While we are still hand feeding Oxbow Critical Care and water, I wanted to see if it would be beneficial to provide Oxbow Natural Science Multi-Vitamin (one of those crunchy oval treats) as a daily treat to help ensure he’s getting his daily intake in?

He only weighed 1.4lbs when we brought him in, but it seems like he’s on the upswing already and is receptive to the hand feeding.

Just checking for some advice. Thanks!

Pigs are not generally given multivitamins. They usually contain fat-soluble vitamins, and since pigs are mostly made up of fat and fur, they can get vitamin overdoses. If you want to give him a supplement, limit it to vitamin C.

Thank you for the advice Bpatters.
We went in for his next feeding and noticed that he is not responsive to the syringe and he feels weak. He was biting the syringe earlier and what seemed to be taking his food and water willingly, even eating and drinking a bit on his own. We’re not sure if we’re over feeding or under feeding at this point. He was getting about 6ml of food his previous feeding. We’re not sure what to do at this point and hope this isn’t the end. He looked to be alert and responsive just a few hours ago. Should we continue the feeding? Please send positive thoughts. Any advice is appreciated.

Has he been eating anything else on his own? Six Mil is nowhere near enough for a feeding. If he's not eating anything else on his own, he needs to get roughly 100 g of critical care per day spaced out into four to six feedings. And he should also have some sort of probiotic an hour or two after the Baytril. Benebac would be a good choice
