    Koa's Medical Thread

    Hi guys!

Koa's been having some foot issues as of late. They are a bit swollen and red with very slight scabbing but no wounds to speak of. I attached pics, but they're not always that red.

He's been to the vet and initially they prescribed a few days of Metacam and 10 days of Baytril. I didn't see any real improvement and I went back and they said this didn't look like further antibiotics were needed but that I should get him to lose weight and cut pellets out of his diet. He's only about 1000 grams so I don't agree with that advice. Any ideas? He's on fleece and is still very active and eating great. I switched to washing the fleece with vinegar rather than laundry detergent to see if that has been irritating him. My other pig's feet are fine.

The vet came to the same conclusion, but they weren't very helpful with what to do. I don't think weight loss is terribly helpful, and they discouraged epsom salt soaks. Should I go back and ask for antibiotics, or should I start doing soaks? Or get my hands on some sort of other medication?

If he were mine i would start soaks and rub with cold pressed coconut oil post soaks. Though I would probably do Chlorhexidine soaks. If they don't improve/look worse with that treatment then I would go back for antibiotics.

I'll pick up some Chlorhexidine tomorrow and get him started on that, thank you! I know from the various threads I've seen that bumblefoot can take a while to clear up but I'll keep an eye on it.

Dilute the chlorhexidine, like 10 to 1. But Epsom salts soaks are ok as long as you keep the pig from getting any solution in the eyes, and you rinse the feet in clear warm water after the soak.

Thanks for the advice! I got the chlorhexidine. It's a 4% solution. So it should be diluted further?

    Re: Koa's Medical Thread

Just wanted to give a quick update. I've been doing Chlorhexidine soaks in the morning and night and an Epsom salt soak midday for the last 2 days with coconut oil after, and his feet are already looking better. The scabbing is gone and they look less swollen and red. I'm hopeful this will be all I need. I've noticed some drying on his feet so for this week when I'll be going to work, I'll just do one soak of each so he has a little bit of a break. I'm very happy with his progress over these couple days and I'm hoping within a week or two he'll be back to normal.
