    Bene Bac questions.

I've been using Acidophilus powder for my boys for antibiotic therapy. I would like to switch to Benebac, but I think the one gram gel syringes won't last very long.

I'm considering ordering this one, and would like to know if it the correct one to buy?

Actually, this is MUCH easier to use and dose, and comes in single and three-unit packs:

I saw those, but at 15 grams at lowest 1 gram per dose that's only a weeks worth is it not?

Punkin gets his antibiotics twice a day, so he would need two grams per day if I'm correct?

The other issue is the one I posted, I can have here tomorrow.

The 15 gram syringes wouldn't be here until between Nov 5 and Nov 18th. That's far too long of a wait for me.

The link you posted is certainly an interesting option.....and economical as well. But, how do you plan to administer it? You know by now that syringing anything is the only way to ensure that the intended dose actually gets into the cavy. What have you been mixing the Acidophilus powder with?

I actually went ahead and ordered the ones that @bpatters linked to.

I'm just not sure how long they're going to last, or if I'm supposed to give a dose after every dose of antibiotics.

I've been breaking an acidophilus caplet into 4 to 5 mL of hot water and stirring it until it's dissolved. Then I draw it up into 4 syringes. I searched for a while for that formula and of course now I can't remember where I got it. He gets one syringe 2 hours after every antibiotic dose

That is the product that I have always used. It's so easy to administer and and provide an accurate dose. If both boys are on probiotics indefinitely, then the powder would certainly be more economical

No one has yet told me what the dosage IS, or how often.

That's because there IS no standard dose.....unless you contact the manufacturer who might be able to suggest it. Look through the Q&A and the reviews on Amazon and you will know as much as I do.

Basically, unless the problem (read diarrhea) is really acute, almost no one doses 2x/day. I never dosed more frequently than 1x/day.

Administer the 1gm dose daily, every other day, or every 2-3 days. It works pretty quickly so you should see how your boy responds and dose accordingly. Be sure to allow sufficient time between the antibiotic and the Bene-Bac.....somewhere around 3 hours. There seems to be some concern that dosing too much too often can cause constipation. I personally don't see it, but anything is possible.

Ok, thank you. That's good to know. He gets his antibiotics every 12 hours so I wasn't sure how often he should get it.

I do dose after every administration of antibiotic. I figure some of that good bacteria is dying in the stomach on its way down, so I'd like to replenish it regularly.

Thank you! Should I use the 1 gram dose or will it dose smaller than that? I've never used them and do NOT want to screw this all up.

It's anybody's guess. If he's doing pretty well, you could give half doses.

Thank you, @bpatters. I'll make sure I consider that when they arrive. Supposedly between Nov 5 and Nov 18th. With a little luck I'm really hoping by that time I won't need them at all.

I actually have the bottle of dry Bene-Bac that is in the link. It's easy to dose (there are instructions for initial feeding and maintenance, along with a body weight chart that tells you how many teaspoons to dose), and there is a lot of it.

My guinea pig is on metacam and Baytril for inner ear infection. I haven’t given her any probiotics yet. She is eating and has no diarrhea or soft poops. Should I still begin the probiotics after each dose of antibiotics. She gets antibiotics 2x daily...every 12 hrs. So could I give her 1/2 gram after each dose or should I give 1 gram once daily? She is 802 grams in weight.

Are you using the pet gel? If so, yes. Give her 1/2 a gram roughly 1-2 hours after each dose of antibiotic. Make sure you monitor her, and weigh her once daily, preferably first thing in the morning before she's eaten anything. That way you'll know if she's getting enough to eat.

Yes. If she has small poops, shes probably not getting enough to eat. As long as your pig is on an antibiotic, a probiotic should also be administered 1-2 hrs after.
