Guinea Pigs happy to destroy everything

I bought the Tree Trunk Hidey and my guinea pigs LOVED it... too much. I’m retiring it to floor time use since I can’t trust them to not chew it. I read it was wood/plastic but I’m really nervous about letting them chew anymore. I dont think they’re quite eating it all, since I have to sweep up so many pieces of the fleece, but it’s still iffy.
Today I bought the twig tunnel and they are going to town.. I caught Caramel red-handed and Apple was on the other side chewing away.

As you can see in the picture, I give them plenty to chew on and they have hay 24/7.
Do y’all have any other hidey/tunnel/toy suggestions for them to destroy? I need to replenish their supply quickly or they’ll start destroying the beautiful cage I created for them.

That’s pretty amazing. I have a female who is not a chewer at all except apple tree branches that I cut for her. Even those she doesn’t strip all the bark off. I bought an Oxbow Timothy Tunnel that she likes but she’s not chewing it. That might be something for you to try

Oh yea! I have an oxbow Timothy tunnel too. I try to save it for floor time so they have something “special” to chew on but at the rate they’re destroying the new tunnel... I’ll probably replace it with that when it’s gone. I have not tried the apple tree branches yet. I’ll put those on my shopping list. thank you

Toilet paper tubes. Make sure you scrape them as clean as possible. My boys love to toss them around, and chew the hell out of them. Stuff them with hay if you really want to see them make a mess.

I am stocked up on those! They went through two of them last week. Completely devoured! Haha I’ve put three of them in their cage for now.

Except for the plastic, I don't think there is anything wrong with them chewing the wood tunnel. That is part of the products use. If you have extra grids, bend and put the together to form a big tunnel and cover with fleece.Click image for larger version.

Use little clasps near the top of each side to have it at an awning height and cover with fleece. It lifts up when you have to clean under it. Click image for larger version.

I'm sure you've already thought of this, but I collect empty cardboard boxes from work whenever I have a chance. I cut holes to make tunnels and hides. They may not last too long with your determined chewers, but at the very least they're plentiful and free!

Ooooh I love the idea of the fleece/grid tunnel. I’ll have to keep that in mind when I get a bigger cage in the future.

As far as cardboard boxes go, I never think to use those because of the tape. I’ll have to start using those as I get online deliveries and just pull the tape off.

Mine also chews their wooden hideys, resulting in the window and door almost becoming a giant door. In addition to the other items mentioned in earlier posts, I buy my piggies these for chewing:

    1) bamboo sticks

    2) Apple & Oat Puff Sticks - I break each stick into 1/3 and these last a long time.

A hay tunnel is better for them than that willow thing.

Re: Guinea Pigs happy to destroy everything

Okay! If I ever get one of those again it will be for floor time only... and maybe as a treat every now and then. I have a hay hidey and other chewable items coming in the mail for now, they have that hay tunnel and whatever is left of the wood tunnel to obliterate. Thank you everyone for giving me tips and items to try out.
My piggies are 6 months old so maybe they’ll grow out of this “extra teething” phase, since regular chewing is inevitable.

My goodness. Mine chew but not that quickly and theres 4 of them.

I like to look and see what Walmart has that's safe to chew since prices better than my regular pet stores. I have found big variety packs (3 but balls are big and different chew material things each) for decent price, thinner cheaper versions of those chewable tunnel things like snack shack type thing, and plain wooden chews.

I like to look at what is safe and decently priced in bits toys with no plastic and just wood and I take bell off but sometimes bird toys cost even more. I wonder if there are bulk packs of those wooden hang toy type things you can buy on Amazon or something and just string them yourself for tons of cheap toys.

Have you checked their teeth? Ive noticed with mine that he chews on stuff when he chips a tooth and it takes a few days to fix itself but i always check his teeth even if he tries to bite me i just rub his cheeks and that stimulation usually lets me have enough time to check the front 4. I check those once a week unless he is excessively chewing.

I checked their teeth and both are fine! Thank you for that suggestion.
And it’s not rapid chewing in the last week or so only, so not a pain or health problem either.
My piggies just like chewing things, I guess. That twig tunnel has one more ring on it... even though I added the hay tunnel. They eat the hay tunnel, the twig tunnel they just chew and pull apart.

With the bamboo sticks, I give it to them in the morning and when I get home in the evening, it looks like shavings.
