I have 14 piggies and so far 2 of them have bumps. The dad had one but he got it removed and now hes all better. I’m just wondering if this is hereditary? I’m worried about getting them removed because i dont want my piggies to die because of the surgery. I always take good care of them but how do i prevent more of them from getting these bumos? Is it something im feeding them? The bumos are hard and kind of big.

Without knowing what the bumps are, there's no way to answer your questions. What did the vet say about the one that
was removed?

An abscess happens because infection sets in, possibly from a scratch or a bite.

How many pigs do you have in the cage? They may be overcrowded and are scratching each other.

I do hope you're not breeding pigs.

By any chance are the abscesses occurring on their necks?

i have 10 in one and 4 in the other. i would NEVER breed pigs. I have genders separated and my cages are big enough.

In that case you may be experiencing an outbreak of Cervical Lymphadenitis in your herd. It is a bacterial infection of the lymph nodes in the neck causing abscesses to develop, and is contagious to other guinea pigs if a lump bursts or is surgically lanced (as opposed to surgical encapsulated removal).

Here is a page with some more info https://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7584

If you think this could be the case it would be worth discussing it with your vet. Also double check the necks of your guinea pigs, particularly those who have abscesses already, CL can cause an affected guinea pig to develop multiple abscesses of different sizes and in different locations on their necks.

well that could be it but none of the abscesses have bursted or been lanced they’ve just been removed. They also all just have one lump.

i would assume it isn’t a lymph node since she has removed all of the abcesses in the guinea pigs. She sent one in to get it tested.

Wow, your cage must be pretty huge if it's big enough for ten pigs. Can we see it?

It's good that she sent one in. It must not be CL or she would have told you so. So they are abscesses, and not cysts? They are different things.
