My guinea pig with URI and other organ problems just passed this morning :(. Up until he passed his cage mate seemed fine. Now he?s grieving and he sleeps a lot more. He?s still eating drinking and peeing, but i haven?t seen and poop from him except 1 tiny one! Is he ok? What?s wrong with him? How can I help, and should I bring him to the vet?

George the guinea pig is male and about 2 or 3 years old. Maybe 4.

Also could it be related to the grieving? Any tips to help him with grieving? Thanks!!

Re: Guinea pig hasn?t pooped since cage mate passed this morning

Update: he is pooping, but only at little, and when it comes out out it looks partially dry. Maybe I see it as only a little bit of poops because I'm used to looking after 2 pigs, :(

Help for George to gain a little weight

Hi! My guinea pig George?s spine feels a little too prominent and I want to help him gradually gain a little weight. His cagemate recently died, so I also want to make sure he isn?t losing weight from stress. Any tips?

Re: Help for George to gain a little weight

Pick one thread to be this guinea pig's medical thread, and I'll change the title. It makes it very difficult for people to help you with questions when they're spread all over different threads.

How old is this pig?

Edited by bpatters: Never mind. I found the other thread. You're only allowed one medical thread per pig.

How much does George weigh?

I'm going to buy a kitchen scale for him later tonight. Will update when it comes in the mail. Also, sorry, I didn't realize I was only allowed 1 thread per pig.

That seems really low for an adult male around 2/3 years. My boars are 10 months and weigh 950 and 1030 grams. I'd weigh him daily to make sure he isn't losing weight.

All pigs are different. Different sizes and weights.

That said, 797 grams seems very light to me as well. To put it in perspective, both of my current boys hit the 800 gram mark rather rapidly. Punkin was 11 weeks old when he hit 800, and Scooter was about 14. And both Pooper and Sly, during their illnesses NEVER went below 1000 grams.

It's extremely difficult to get an adult pig to gain weight, but it can be done.

Has he always been that small?

Yes. I think a reason I never realized it was because he never changed weight.

Hi! I recently noticed George had a little discharge dried up on the side of his nose. Hopefully I can take him to the vet tomorrow. In the mean time, does anyone know what’s if anything is wrong with him and how I can help him? Also how i can clean the discharge . I tried wiped it off but it only did so much. Thanks!

You sure it's nasal discharge and not boar glue? Boar glue wouldn't wipe off.

From my google searches , I think it?s not. If you could describe it a bit more that would be helpful, but the discharge (if it is) that wouldn?t come off was on on his chin and a little below it.

I got some off his nose, and if i can find my dog fur clippers i can trim off the stuff below his chin. I’m just worried he might have a URI

Don't worry about trying to get it off. The pig will do that, eventually.

Does he have any other symptoms of a URI? Sneezing? Off his food? Lethargic?

Actually nothing else was wrong with him. He?s eating ,drinking and pooping fine, and he?s acting the same. The only thing that concerns me is that i could how (relatively) easily i could wipe of the stuff from his nose. From pictures of boar glue, the stuff on George?s nose look more like dried up boogers.

I just remembered one more thing actually. Sometimes it sounds like he’s trying to squeak but it sounds muffled. It may be because he doesn’t have a friend yet.
