Willow has (or had) a URI, but she's been on medication and they were separated for a few days about a week ago. Anyway, Amber has had on and off issues with making weird breathing noises for over a month now. Other than that, she's been in tippy top shape. It starts, lasts for maybe a day, then typically doesn't happen again for at least a week. I thought it could be that she's inhaling a bit of hay, since it does sound like a stuffy nose, but it happens way too often for that to be the case. I wanted to take her to the vet for a URI or something similar, but my mom doesn't want to take her unless we need to (the visits are kind kind of expensive, I guess). I know how fast URIs can go downhill and how deadly they are, so that's why it's strange to me that this has been happening for so long and she seems perfectly fine otherwise. I had thought whatever this was had passed, but it happened again this morning and is still going on. The sound is a bit like crinkling a water bottle. I'll try to figure out how to include a video (sorry I'm still new here and am using my phone). (Thanks)

Here's a video of her breathing. It's stopped now, but I suspect it'll come back again >.<

It sounds like Amber has an upper respiratory infection.

I lost my little bear Sly, at the beginning of August. His breathing was similar to that off and on for the last month of his life.

Granted, Sly had other issues. His URI turned into pneumonia, and he fell ill after the last of several molar trims for malocclusion. In the end his heart and lungs became too weak to fight any more. He was almost 7.

That crackling, while it could theoretically be something else, is most likely an URI and I believe you would do well to get her in to a cavy savvy vet ASAP.

Sorry for the delayed response...
We've emailed the vet, but they say there isn't much they can do for us if she's not making that noise still. I would love to get her to the vet for some different sort of examination, but my mom (again) doesn't want to go to the vet if we don't HAVE to. I've noticed that she's had what must be blood on her nose, and when I picked her up she made the noise
again for a second. Is it possible that she has allergies? Side note, the small animal specialist we took Willow to a bit ago wasn't quite sure that the other vet had been correct in diagnosing her with URI. I don't recall her making a noise like that, but her nose did bleed once.

Is the vet who saw her cavy savvy? Most small animal veterinarians only ever see dogs and cats and have little or no training in how to treat guinea pigs. Guinea pigs need an exotic veterinarian. Weird breathing sounds with no other symptoms is one thing -- could it potentially be something other than a URI? It's possible. But if you're starting to see blood coming from her nose, I would definitely take her a good exotic vet who knows how to treat guinea pigs. Do you weigh her regularly? Have you noticed whether or not she's losing weight?
