Hello all, I'm Heddie and on Saturday I hit the big 4.0. My fiance (who has a 5yo) came up with the idea of guinea pigs for a present.

I've had rats and hamsters in the past and current have a glut of tropical fish and a hermit crab colony. Our living space won't allow for the pug I want, and cats send me to the ER.
That said, I've spent the last month watching videos, reading books, and buying the top reccomded you name it.
It's time for the piggies to come home.
My problem is this, it's been advised young pigs are best for first time parents, but adoption in my area is dry.
I wanted 2 girls, but the pet shop I trust only has young males. Is the care for their anal glands truly that difficult?

That's actually how I found you guys, using google-fu, and I got a whole new slew of disagreeing answers. Help?

Young pigs are NOT best for first time parents. They're skittish and taming them takes an enormous amount of patience. Especially since there's a small child involved, I'd recommend older pigs.

Please don't buy them from a pet shop. They're often inbred, sold with parasites and illnesses, and raised in terrible conditions. There are hundreds of pigs in rescues and shelters that need good homes, and you'll also be freeing up space for other pigs to be rescued. There are 15 guinea pigs up for adoption within an hour of you: https://www.petfinder.com/search/small-furry-for-adoption/us/la/denham-springs/?species=Guinea+Pig

Here's our recommended reading list for new pig owners:
