Unhappy Poop dry with conical shape

    Hi all,

Our oldest piggie (male, 4.5 years old) has stopped eating or drinking, and stays quiet. Poops are in a strange shape, and look very dry (and very few). He has also lost 200g lately. Hair still looks shiny.

We forced him to drink with a syringe, and later today will try to feed him with smashed pellets and veggies.

I attach image of the poops.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Take him to a vet asap! When your piggie doesn't eat, something is seriously wrong. If he has recently lost weight it's possible he's been eating less for quite some time, and 200g is a lot of weight for a little piggie! The few, weirdly shaped poops are most likely cause he isn't eating/drinking enough to keep his digestive system going smoothly.

Keep giving him water with the syringe, as much as he will drink and possibly more. If he doesn't want water at all you can try adding some flavor to it, mixing out a small bit of juice in water usually makes them drink more. Give him his favorite foods and see of he eats. Try giving him tiny pieces too, in case he's having teeth problems. Call a vet and ask what you should do about food, it's important that he gets nutrients but depending on what's wrong it might get worse if you force him to eat. Just get him to a vet, now! Everything else is just to keep him alive longer, you NEED a vet to find out why he isn't eating/drinking and how to fix it!

You need to get food into him, and get him to a vet.

The poops in the photos are very typical of a guinea pig who has stopped eating, and if you don't start getting food into him his digestive system could shut down or he could develop any other potentially fatal complication caused by lack of food intake. Guinea pigs need food constantly moving through their systems.

Have a read of this link for more informations force feeding http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

@Meaut The only times you shouldn't force feed a guinea pig is when they are in full GI stasis or have an intestinal torsion or an intestinal blockage, but as long as they are still pooping you can rule out those issues. So if they are still pooping, but not eating, you must force feed them.

Ditto @Soecara. A guinea pig that's not eating is a guinea pig that's dying. Please get him to an exotic vet ASAP.

Re: Poop dry with conical shape

Thanks all for your answers. You are extremely kind.

Today I took some pellets (extruded vegetables) and pulverized them and mixed with water. I fed him with that and it seemed he enjoyed. (about 10 ml)

Also gave him some water (5 ml)

The only day I could take him to exotic vet is next Saturday, and after a ride of 80 km from here.

Hope he can survive until then. Our plan is to feed him like this for 4-5 times a day.

We also gave him a bath, it seems he enjoyed it too

    Thabks again for your help!!!

That's not enough food to give him. A pig that's eating nothing else needs 100+ cc. of Critical Care or pellet slurry per day for every kilogram it weighs, split into 5-6 feedings around the clock. Adjust up or down according to the weight of the pig, and down if he's eating anything else.

Don't bother with a small animal vet -- they're not trained to deal with pocket pets. But if he doesn't start eating, then do get him to the exotic vet.

Yeah, my guess is to feed him several times a day like that. Otoh we already appointed a visit to a highly specialized vet. He only treats exotic pets. He is the one who neutered him indeed, and probably the best exotic vet in Barcelona

    Thanks, will keep you updated
