Small nipping and worried about Reese?

I started noticing yesterday that one of my guinea pigs was squealing in what seemed to be pain. So me being me, I set up a recording device to watch them because they never did it when I was in front of them. I found that Nova would be poking her nose at Reese, under her chin, as well as sniffing her bum, and Reese would nip at her nose. However, Nova didn't back off at all. She stubbornly kept nuzzling at her. And Nova has never been touchy-freely with any of the guinea pigs, she's very independent. But now she doesn't leave Reese alone and will stand next to her, nudging her face, constantly. I can't help but wonder if maybe something is wrong with Reese and Nova can detect it? That might just be ignorant thinking, but... they've never had a problem like this before. They've always tolerated each other and never nipped at each other or even chased each other. Is this something I should worry about?

Pigs CAN sense when something is wrong with another, and it's possible for them to harass the other pig.

Do you weigh your pigs regularly? That's generally the first indicator if something is wrong with them. It's one thing they can't hide.

I'd check Reese very thoroughly to make sure she's not getting sick. Pay particular attention to whether her urine smells or not, which could be an indication of a UTI.

On the other hand, maybe Nova is in heat.

    How old are they?

They are almost 8 months old.

Okay, so not old enough for an ovarian cyst. If the problem only lasts a day or so, I'd say Nova is in heat. If not, I'd take Reese to a vet for a checkup.

My guess would also be that Nova is in heat, I see it with my girls all the time, it generally only lasts a day or 2, is never anything major, just normal dominance, and then it's back to all being pals again . Please let us know how it goes.
