A coworker of mine sent me this picture yesterday. It?s a dresser that?s been modified for use by piggies. I have the perfect chest-of-drawers for this project, but I must know:would it really be a viable option, or is it just for kitsch value?

It's WAY too small for two guinea pigs, and has very poor air circulation. Pigs also need a large flat space to run in, and they don't have it in that cage. I wouldn't put my pigs in it.

I had my doubts, but I wanted a second opinion

Way too small for guinea pigs! Though, change the Plexiglas to wire and add some wire on the sides of the cage, and it would make a decent rat cage lol.

Ditto. That type of setup can work for a hamster, but no good for guinea pigs.

No! You can't have just one pig. They are highly socail and need a guinea pig companion. Annd it isn't even the minimum size for one, which is 4.5 square feet

Actually, the minimum size for one pig is closer to 8 square feet.

8 square feet for 2. This is the minimum agreed on by vets and rescues all over.

Emphasis on the "more is preferred" part. To give you an idea (and I understand that not everyone can do this) my pair of boars have a cage and pen in my living room that is almost 40 square feet.
Yes, more is defiantly better. I'm just saying that the minimum is that, not that that's the ideal cage. Also, 40 square feet is HUGE. My girls have a nearly 16 foot cage (exactly the same as a 2x5 C&C) and we can barley fit that haha.

Actually, Teresa's recommended cage sizes are the same as those of the SPCA and other organizations -- 7.5 square feet for one pig as a minimum, 10.5 preferred. See this link: https://www.guineapigcagesstore.com/about-candccages. And if you poke around in her other stuff, you'll find the same standards for the other organizations.

I've never seen 4.5 square feet recommended as a minimum by anybody except the people who manufacture and sell pet store cages. I'd like to see your references on that.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrHJ7wDhCulk098AkuEowKg this person volunteers at the LA Guinea Pig Rescue, which is the largest in the world (I believe anyway), and this is their website: https://www.laguineapigrescue.com/cages.html
I could be mistaken and misheard.

it looks cool, I'm not sure that it will be convenient to operate and clean.

Seems like many people do such houses.

I would like to build something similar to my two guinea pigs when I move to my new property in Greece. But I would make it bigger for air circulation.
