    Question Flaky skin, Dandruff?

I recently noticed there was a section on the side of my guinea pig that had a bit of dandruff coming out of it. When i picked her up and looked around her skin in that specific area she squeeked like she was in pain.

I looked for signs of Mites for hairloss and scabs which i did not see.

I was wondering what it might be?

I live in southern california, and it gets quite warm here, i heard that sometimes it may be dry skin cause of the weather but i wasnt sure.

I'd treat her for mites. She may be scratching enough to cause the "dandruff."

Hunter has the same thing. But it's one spot on her rear. Is there a product or method that can treat for possible mites? Or does my vet need to prescribe something?

Well she isn't really scratching herself, so I'm not sure if it is mites.

If it is mites, what course of treatments do you suggest?

There's no definitive test for mites. A vet will happily do a skin scraping and charge you for it, but it hurts the pig, misses the mites half the time, and the end prescription is the same as if you hadn't had the test: treat for mites.
