Have you ever wondered why rats (in Australia) sneeze so much?
I got this first hand from a vet:

Rats in Australia have a genetic fault that is present in ALL rats in Australia. It does something to their lungs which makes them sneeze lots, and it also shortens their lifespan to two to three years tops. It is the horrible truth, and we can't fix it because Australian laws mean we can't bring in new rats from different countries to start a disease-free strand of domestic pet rats.

And in case you were wondering, no, it's not infectious to humans or anything else as far as I know.

Damn Aussie animal immigrant rules!

I'm not sure of the name, and it doesn't cause constant sneezing, just when they are happy, exercising or stressed. And according to my vet, rats live up to five years if they're properly looked after, and they don't have this horrid disease. And if you're right about them catching it as soon as they come out of the controlled environment, then maybe rats will have it forever.
I didn't know it was in America too. It's sad.
