Hay Thoughts on this product?

I'm learning that hay doesn't have to be expensive. However, there's still alot that I don't know.

It will cost me with shipping about 22$

Is this safe for my guinea pig(I noticed there's calcium in the hay- is that something I should be concerned about, since too much calcium isn't hood for guidea pigs?)?

Are the "manufacturers" trustworthy?

Are there any questions I should be asking (is there such a thing as freshness by hay?)

And is the price decent?

Interested in your thoughts on the subject. Thanks for your help.

I think that is kind of expensive, 40 oz of hay for $9.45. I've never heard of the company before.

I get a 50 lb box of Orchard grass from Smallpetselect.com (there are options to get smaller packages), also they have coupon codes just check around, never pay full price.

We are also in NYC and order 10 pound boxes of orchard grass hay (oxbow) from amazon since with prime it arrives quick and as cheap as we've found.

All hay has calcium in it. You're not aiming for a calcium-free diet, just one with low calcium for adult pigs.

That price is way high, as far as I'm concerned. That's $3.75 per pound. I get 40 pounds of Small Pet Select for about $60, which is $1.50 per pound.

Thx p.grandma I'll look into that. Yeh I figured as much bpat (about calcium in all hay. Just making sure this is no different ).and you really think so? Alright then. I'll look for something cheaper. Thanks for the heads up guys ^^

The 40 ounces would last only a couple of days we would need at least 2 each week. For the cost of 2 x 40 Oz bags at petsmart (the only place local to find it for us) we get a 10 pound box on amazon. We order a month after I open it, and the new box sits here a few days before we need to open it.

We order our pellets that way too, a 9 pound bag lasts us about 3 months. I literally write on the top of the hay boxes for reorder dates.

@PiggyGrandma15, I don't understand. Forty ounces is 2.5 pounds, and if you need two each week, that's five pounds a week. So how does a nine-pound bag last you 12 weeks?

Because there is less waste because the bags were like half powder and dust. And the 10 pound box of hay lasts about a month for us (*maybe* 5 weeks).

It is the 9 pound bag of pellets that we order through amazon that lasts 3 months (12 weeks).

Binkybunny is awesome, but pretty much everything in their store is way overpriced. I would order online from either Oxbow (drsfostersmith.com has the best prices I've found for Oxbow), KMS Hayloft, or Small Pet Select. Those three are generally comparable in price per pound and all have great quality hay. I've been getting Small Pet Select and absolutely love it.

Thx pigger. I may look into it next time. For now, I ordered from amazon around 9 lbs of oxbow timothy hay for 30$ . I needed it quickly so if it was overpriced it's still fine.

With amazon prime I feel like it gets here so much faster and if not I know that I can call amazon about it. If you account for the shipping, at least last time I checked, it was comparable.

Nine pounds of hay at $30 is $3.33 a pound.

I pay, including shipping, about $60-$70 for 40 pounds. That's $1.50 to $1.75 a pound. Doesn't sound comparable to me.

I don't have room for that amount of hay @bpatters. What I found (and granted I haven't looked in a while) was that for the smaller amounts of hay (meaning 9/10 pounds) it was comparable, considering I have it in 2 days (usually next day). I could order a 50 pound box of oxbow hay through amazon for like $45 (I think, but again, I haven't looked in a while) but I haven't got the room to store that at the moment. When I do get the basement done and the piggies can take over the current play room that may change.
