My 3 year old Guinea pig Charlie is lethargic and not eating as much as he used to. It started about 3 days ago and yesterday I noticed his pee was a reddish color. The urine color went back to normal and I thought it was from a red pepper I had given him that day so I didn't panick. Finally I decided to take him to the vet because he still wasn't eating as much as he normally does. I took him to a regular vet because I couldn't find any exotic vets in my area. So I asked the doctor about the reddish color and he decided to check for stones.
I don't know what a normal check up for gp looks like because this was our first time at the vet but I thought this guy was pretty rough. My gp was squealing like he was in a lot of pain.
The X-rays showed that there were no stones in his system so they just gave a syringe to collect a urine sample to bring back to them so they can check for uti.
A few minutes after leaving the hospital I noticed he had peed and it was bright red like there was fresh blood and it hasn't changed since the visit (about 7 hrs ago now). Is it normal for gps to bleed after a check up? Should I be worried? I would like to take him to another vet to see if there is any internal damage due to the way this doctor handled him but I'm on a tight budget. What do you recommend?
Also what could be the reason for his lethargy and lack appetite? I already ruled out impaction because I checked and everything was fine. Do you think I should go back to this vet for the uti test and possible treatment?
If you could give me any advice on what to do I would really appreciate it, thanks.
