Question What veggies can they have everyday?

Hi everyone, could someone please help?

I know there are some lists that say what veggies can be fed everyday, but some of the veggies are on some listsí 'good for them' side and some listsí 'bad for themí side. I know they can have bell peppers daily, can they have cucumber and celery?

Could someone please help me to make a list of vitamin c rich and other foods they can eat each day?

I received a list from the vet and it says:

    everyday:
    - fresh hay such as oaten, timothy, orchard grass and botanical hay (after timothy, which is best?)
    - hay chaff - oaten and lucerne
    - pellets - 1 tablespoon per animal
    - green leafy vegetables such as chinese veggies, celery, broccoli leaves, spinach, silver beet, carrot tops (greens i think) rocket, kale, chicory
    - fruit tree branches and leaves
    - rose leaves and petals, fresh or dried
    - fresh grass and foliage
    - herbs
    - veggies high in vitamin c - parsley, capsicum/bell pepper, kale

Are there any veggies you would add/take away from the list?

    1-2x per week
    - fresh fruit like apple, banana, pear, sultanas (i thought they couldnít have these), cranberries (these as well?), strawberries (can they have the tops and the berry?)
    - lucerne hay - handful (too much calcium?)
    - hibiscus flowers
    - fennel
    - carrots - small amounts
    - almonds - 1-2 per animal

Are there any changes/additions that need to be made?
REALLY sorry for all the questions!
Thanks in advance... Parsley, Clover, Maple and me

Here's a good list. You can actually download the chart into Excel and sort on the various values that you're looking for. http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...us-Plants-List

    From your list above:

They need a long strand grass hay ALL the tie (timothy, orchard, meadow, blue, or brome). If they're less than six months old, you can supplement with some alfalfa if you like, but it's a legume (like peas), not a grass, and it won't keep their teeth properly ground down.

They don't need chaff at all -- it has very little nutritional value.

Pigs less than six months old and pregnant or nursing sows need an unlimited supply of alfalfa pellets. All other pigs should be limited to 1/8 cup per day of a plain timothy pellet -- no seeds, nuts, or colored bits. KMS Hayloft makes the best pellets available. Oxbow also makes a good pellet, but some pigs have problems with too much urinary calcium when fed Oxbow.

For greens, red or green leaf lettuces are very good choices for every day greens. Broccoli and anything else in the brassica family is gas producing, and can cause digestive problems. Kale, spinach, parsley, etc are too high in calcium, oxalates, and vitamin A to be fed any way except very sparingly.

Bell pepper is the best way to give vitamin C.

No sultanas -- too high in sugar (all dried fruits are), and there's some question about whether grapes may be toxic to guinea pigs. They are to cats, and there's a big debate over whether that also applies to other small animals.

No almonds or other nuts or hard seeds. Guinea pigs have tiny throats and are easily choked on things like that.

Otherwise, your list looks ok. You may find that your pig pays no attention to fruit twigs -- they were a complete waste of money for my two.

    Is 1/8 of a cup 1 tablespoon? I thought 1/8 of a cup was 2 tablespoons...

One-eighth of a cup is two tablespoons.

As a new cavy owner I found the lists bpatters referred you to above to be gold. I printed them and hung on the frig. We stick mainly with green leaf lettuce and bell peppers for the simplicity of it. But then on a daily basis I throw in a 3rd or even a 4th thing for fun, whatever is on our menu I double check the list for it to be an approved food and an approved frequency and if so I toss her one...such as if I am peeling carrots, I'll throw a few strips in or for example shared a tiny slice of honeydew today.

Not to distract from the original question, but are all bell peppers safe? Most lists I've seen don't mention yellow bell peppers, only green / red

Yes, they're all fine. The colored ones have a bit more sugar than the green ones, and are a bit higher in vitamin C.

oh well I knew they were safe, I meant more if you can feed them as often, or if they're nutrition is different. You answered that though, thank you. Just didn't quite word it right,

With the 1-2x per week veggies, does it mean just 1 or 2 veggies from that list per week, or can you feed a different one each day for a week?

Hopefully you understand that confusing question...

That means you can feed that particular vegetable once or twice a week. Mine get several different kinds per day, depending on what I've got in the fridge.
