The oldest guinea pig in the world!!!

    https://www.facebook.com/worldsoldestguineapig

I've been trying to find out when Sweetie died. I found out she was born in 1996, which was when I was born!!!
The articles I read say that she lived to be 15. But facebook seems to suggest that she died this year. Which would make her 18!
I'm confused? How long did she live? Does anyone know?

From reading the Facebook page sweetie was actually a he, born in October 1996. I believe he was only ever recorded to be 15 because they were unable to find a vet to verify his age. According to the Facebook page he passed away in early July of this year.

That's impressive! Twice the age I would expect out of a pig.

If you read their posts this person is a breeder. Growing up in the horse industry I know animals are not always who they are said to be, and it's very easy to find a replacement that looks similar enough to fool everyone. The breeder is using Sweeties fame to get attention, and if you read a few years ago was still breeding with him. I'm sure buying a baby from the oldest pig in the world is a great marketing tool, or a baby from the breeder of the oldest pig in the world is another great marketing tool.

In the horses people used to switch horses all the time. It's been cracked down on in almost all breeds since the 80's, but there are still a few where there are loop holes people exploit.

ETA: I'm not saying it's not legit, I'm just saying I don't believe it.

I agree with the above, but it would be wonderful if that is true!

I didn't even think of that. The pictures look like he was fairly unique-looking, but I'm sure it's possible he was more than one pig over the course of his "life."

If the breeder did do that, I am truly disgusted. Lying about a guinea pig's age just to get people to buy the babies. Who would do that? And breeding them at all is another story, but I won't get into that.

What has the world come to these days?

There are a lot of people who do it in all species of animal. It's been happening for hundreds of years. From a breeding perspective, every animal has a worth and in most cases (unless your animal is insured for big bucks) it's worth more alive then dead. If you've invested in a specific animal (promoting it, showing it, etc) and it dies then you want to get that investment back with big returns by selling their progeny. The same happens if you have a sterile animal (which is the one I've seen the most often). It's unethical, but most people are willing to be unethical if they don't think they'll get caught. It's unfortunate but true. Also, the replacement animal just has to be similar enough to the other to fool everyone. In some cases it's impossible, like if the animal has a really crazy pattern, but even pintos have been passed off for other pintos in the horses.

Just a note, my family never participated in this type of behavior. We did buy a horse that was not who he was supposed to be in the 80's, but we bought him because we liked him not who we thought he was.
