    The guinea pig winter blues

It's that time of the year again... It's cold, rainy and absolutely no guinea pig weather. I live in the Netherlands, so during the summer it's not extremely hot all the time and my piggies were outside a lot. The problem is that ofcourse they can't be outside. It's way too cold for them. I feel like my piggies were way happier and healthier during the summer... How do you guys keep your piggies healthy and entertained during the cold and rainy times of the year?

I'd love to hear how you do it.

    Thanks!

More inside floor time, and I like to sew them toys/beds out of fleece for them to sleep in/play with. Other than that, I just like to pick them up more than usual... watching movies with guinea pigs is a very cozy thing to do in the evening, and it keeps the humans entertained, too!

Thanks for the reply! I'd love to give them more inside floor time. The thing is: i got them from someone who never picked them up, so they're still very afraid when i let them run free. And watching movies with them is a great idea! I just wish my one piggie didn't like to pee on my lap :') I'll be sure to make them more fleece toys

Oh yeah, totally get what you're saying, that's why I switch out the pig about every 15 minutes...that means about 6 different pigs throughout the whole movie!

Ha! When my pigs get relaxed, that's when you have to watch out.

We put a waterproof pad on our lap and they have learned to get off my chest and go to the pad if they have to pee, then they crawl right back up. Sometimes colonel will be sleeping on my chest and he wakes up like he startled and runs down to the pad to pee then comes back up and goes right back to sleep.

I take my guinea pigs out and train them to do tricks every day. It's a great bonding time for us, and provides exercise and mental stimulation for them. I've trained them to push around a little soccer ball, and now they will play with balls in their cage for fun. I also put toilet paper tubes, boxes, paper bags, and huge heaps of hay for them to play with. Here's a video of my guinea pigs playing a fun game, called the muffin tin game.

@prettynyguen, your piggies are gorgeous and very clever little dudes! I might try that with my girls. I don't have a load of those balls, but I could use scrunched up paper balls with treats underneath. I would love to see more of your ideas. I think I saw a video of yours before along those lines, and was very impressed.

Actually, I just watched a few more of your videos that came up when your above one ended. So cute! Where do you get all the training stuff like goal net, hoop, etc?

Re: The guinea pig winter blues

Hi janinehunt. Training guinea pigs is a lot of fun, and I'm always amazed at how smart they are. Using scrunched up paper would totally work for the muffin tin game. I either make all their props with a glue gun and popsicle sticks, or use stuff I find at the dollar store. Their soccer net is actually a little kids one, modified by cutting all the pieces shorter. The hoop is just a cross-stitch hoop hung from some old pieces of wood I nailed together. They are always completely supervised while training, so I'm not worried about them nibbling on the props. I love the picture of you little piggie on your profile photo.
