Hi Everyone, My 6 month old guinea pig Fudge is pregnant - was accidental, one of our male guinea pigs somehow got into the females cage!! And as luck would have it within the 1 hour or so he was in there, he managed to impregnate one of the girls :(

She has 3 pups in her waiting to get out and she is now at this current time fully dilated (pelvic bones are more than 2 finger widths apart)

Earlier this evening she was making some strange noises and I had though it was about to happen, it lasted about an hour with some panting movements but no contractions as yet.

Does anyone know approximately how long after she is fully dilated she should give birth? It has been about 24 hours now. She isn't showing any signs of discomfort or pain and is still happily eating her grass and pellets.

I have a background in Veterinary Science, and I have in fact studied small animal reproduction, however it's a bit different when it's happening to you first hand!

Thanks for the help.

Any time now. Usually delivery happens within 24-48 hours after the pelvic bones separate, but the pups can't read and don't always get the memo.

No babies yet, she is back to acting normal, but she is sitting in the one place and not moving much so I know it will be soon. It's really just a waiting game now! Lucky girl has a whole bedroom to her self in the house right now lol.

She doesn't need to be by herself. Guinea pigs make great aunties, and they'll probably help her clean the pups. Besides, if you leave them apart for very long, you'll have to reintroduce them all over again, and it may not work the second time.

Thanks bpatters - she has been socialising in her play pen with the other 2 girls during the day, it's just at night I've put her on her own just to keep a watchful eye on her.

Cute! I love dark-eyed-whites. That food that you have for them is not the best, unfortunately. She and her pups need plain pellets with no nuts or seeds. https://www.guinealynx.info/pellets.html

I appreciate your response but the food we use is a high quality mix and our guinea pigs are all very healthy :)

Those mixes are much too high in fat and low in fiber and also pose a serious choking risk for your pigs. They need plain pellets, none of that other junk. Leave the birdseed for the birds.

Congratulations, they are so cute! Brownie looks just like mom but maybe an Abby (hard to tell, it's like she's camouflaged up against Fudge).

Yes, and the seed hulls can get caught in their teeth and stuck in their gums, causing abrasions and abscessing.

Congrats on your new Piggies!! They are beautiful :) My Lemon is doing exactly what yours was doing - Making noises and such... I thought she was about to give birth, but has not! Just like your little girl, she is eating and drinking... Acting normal now, but doesn't move much... It has been over 24 hours since she had me convinced it was going to happen... Maybe it's my turn soon? LOL
