    Abscess help?!

    Hey guys,
    So heres the story.

I have had "Piggy" for 2 years. Early this year a small lump suddenly appeared on her back close to her spine. I kept an eye on it for around a week or 2 and it grew crazily and was quite large.
It did not seem to bother him at all, he still ate, drank, ran and played however when I put my hands close to it he would turn around to nibble his fur close to it.

I read online and assumed this was an abscess. I took him to my local vet who assured me they are experienced in small animals.
Thet vet there.. literally "popped" the abscess and a lot of fuzzy puss came out this obviously left piggy in a lot of pain, and I felt horrible for trusting the vet. It left a large gaping flesh hole in his back which the vet gave me antibiotics and advised to do a salt wash twice a day.

The wound healed rather fast and all was okay for quite some time. However recently the abscess has popped up again (not as bad). What do I need to do ?
    Help please :(

Do you have a picture? I would find a better vet and take him there. They will do tests and most Likley drain the abscess and give you antibiotics. Then they will go from there. Is your vet an exotic vet? Or a dog/cat vet?

Abscesses need to be cleaned out frequently and kept open so they heal from the inside out. The key is to keep cleaning out the pus so the pocket stays clean. Abscesses continue to produce pus so if you allow it to heal on the outside, it'll form again. If it's still an open wound, clean it with a Qtip and a solution of diluted chlorhexadine and water that's light blue in color. You can get an angle tipped syringe and use that to also flush it out with the solution. If it's already closed up, you'll need to have your vet reopen it again and start over. Do you have another guinea pig housed with your guinea pig? Abscesses are usually caused by a bite that becomes infected.

That doesn't look, or sound, like an abscess to me. It's more likely a sebaceous cyst or some other type of blocked oil gland. They do fill up from time to time if not completely removed.

How do I get it removed? Would that be surgery?
The vet advised me it was an abscess.

Guess I should find another vet :/
He's a dog and cat vet but assured me they deal with small animals regularly

And No, Pinky. no other guinea pigs housed with him. Only once did he live with a small bunny for a short period but their cage was divided

I'd find an exotic vet to look at it. If it's not an abscess, he may be able to get along without treatment for the foreseeable future.
