I have been transferred for my job, and will be moving from Austin, TX to St. Louis, MO in mid August. Going to have to drive it. I'll be in a small SUV with two cats, a 50 lb dog, a sun conure and my two boys, Phobos & Deimos. The dog and the bird have done car trips before and do very well. I'll be traveling with mild sedatives for the cats if needed, but generally they're very easy (and will be confined to the dog's crate). I'm most concerned about this trip with the piggies. I'm looking at a 15 hour drive. Splitting it up over two days may not be an option, and multiple vehicles is not an option at all. My main concern right now is keeping them comfortable. While they normally live in a 3 x 3 pen in my living room, they'll be travelling in their pet store cage; a rabbit cage, 1.5 x 3 ft, which is their "home away from home" when they have had to stay with a friend when I'm out of town and for when I'm cleaning their pen).
My plan is to fold all of the seats down and place the cage length-wise across the car against the back of the driver/passenger seats, to allow for the air conditioner to blow between the seats and over their cage (and also for better monitoring). Also, if the sun is shining into the car on one side, they will be able to move to the other side to get out of it. They will have fresh water and I'll pack some cool veggies for them for the trip. I've also thought of carrying some Ice packs to place around their cage if needed to keep them cool, but I was wondering if anyone had done a trip like this before, and had some suggestions?
Phobos & Deimos thank you in advance!!!!
