I buy a bale of timothy hay for about $15.00, however it is a huge mess to try and leave in the bag. Every time I need to get in it, I have to open it and pray I don't leave a huge mess. I thought about like a Rubbermaid storage container, but it has areas for air to come in. Doesn't hay have to be air tight?

No I think you want air or it could mold at the bottom. I don't get hudge bales so I don't know. But I think I have heard it somewhere on here before.

Then I owe you a thank you because my common sense didn't kick in until you mentioned mold. I have been brewing on this question for about a wheak (lol) :)

A Rubbermaid container is fine. All you have to do is drill a bunch of holes in the sides so there's some air circulation.

That sounds a lot better than stabbing holes in it. How big do the holes need the be?

i live in an apartment building so storing hay is not easy. i get a big bale from our feed store, and lightly wrap it in a sheet to catch all the stray hay. then, i lay the bale on its side, and leave the top unwrapped. i keep the bale in our storage room and fill a big bucket to bring out to my guinea pig cage every few days.

The holes that I drilled into my tub are about 1/8". Evenly(ish) spaced. I didn't measure, I eye-balled everything. But it's enough to keep the hay and dust contained, but still let there be air flow.
