I adopted my latest piggy Pearl mid-February, knowing there was a decent chance she could be pregnant because she had previously been housed with a male. After going back and forth with myself for several weeks, I am now 100% sure she is pregnant. She's huge! I will post a picture tomorrow, but I can for sure feel at least two babies. She's lop-sided, so I am assuming that either one baby is bigger than the other, or that she is carrying two on one side and one on the other side. It's been 13 years since I had a litter of pups, so I am nervous and a little bit excited at the same time. I know she's pretty young because she has grown since I had her, and her estimated age was 5-6 months when I adopted her. If I did my math correctly, she should deliver within the next two weeks at least. I don't feel any separation of her pelvic bones yet, so we'll see. Any and all advice is appreciated.

I can't get a good picture of Pearl and I don't want to stress her out. But, her pelvic bones are separated about a finger width and I can feel the pups grinding their teeth. It should be soon. I won't mess with her any more until after they come. Then I'll post baby pictures. :)

Pearl still hasn't had her babies. They're still moving so they're ok. They just want to make me a nervous wreck before they finally come! The picture really doesn't do justice to her true size. I haven't been handling her but the cage had to be cleaned, so I lifted her in a box and she walked out onto my lap. I was very careful not to lift and put pressure on her belly.

They're finally here! Both teddies, one PEW boy and a tricolor agouti girl. Will post pictures this afternoon.

They're adorable! Nothing cuter than babies. Please post pics as they grow.

I will post more pictures as they grow. The little white one, the boy has a crest, the little tricolor girl doesn't. Dad was a silver agouti teddy with a crest.

While I would never have intentionally bred her, it is interesting to see how the genes come together. I thoroughly expected smooth babies because teddy genes are recessive to smooth hair. That means Pearl has to carry the teddy gene too. And I thought they'd probably all be crested since both parents were crested but the baby girl isn't crested. So both parents must carry the "not-crested " gene. Sorry for rambling, but I'm just fascinated by genetics.

It's good to know I'm not the only one! Too bad breeding is so risky and there are so many homeless piggies in the world. :( I'm just glad everybody turned out healthy and happy.

I also don't really know what to do with the little rascals. I didn't really want to keep them, but I was so hoping for a same-sex pair so I could re home them together. I'd hate for them to end up alone. So if anybody here needs a new baby in about 3 weeks, let me know.

I have a quick question I hope someone can answer. Both babies are doing well and growing every day. Does anybody know what age a Himalayan guinea pig starts developing its color points? My PEW baby boy's ears are starting to look grayish, and so are the pads on his back feet. He might not be a PEW after all. Or it could be my imagination.

If his ears are turning gray, he's definitely not a PEW. I believe the ears start turning when they're a few weeks old.

2 to 4 weeks is when my two himalayans (one boy one girl) started to darken on the feet and ears. The girl started developing brown pads and ears at two weeks and by 6 weeks she had strands of fur coming through brown on her nose, she ended up being a chocolate himalayan but she only had light markings on her feet and nose. The boy only started developing grey colouring on his pads and tips of his ears at four weeks, he ended up with light grey ears and one foot greyer then the others but none of his fur changed colour at all.

I was quite surprised as their mother is a black and white agouti (so she has large patches that look grey and the rest of her is white), I have no idea what the father looked like.
