@Narwhals Rock: Glad I could contribute and revive the thread. Good idea; everyone is lost for ideas sometime. :)

@piggie Addict; Thank you! Jupi is a girl, and I'll definitely pass along to her that she has fans! :p

Thanks, @HappyHopperz! I was looking online before I got my pigs, and just COULDN'T find anything suitable... Even on the forum!

@CritterSlave, thanks for those! There's always SOMETHING to add... Once I get another post with an idea or 2, I'll add those in there...

Things I thought of to add:

-Aspen, Care-fresh or kiln-dried pine shavings
-Human toenail clippers or bird toenail clippers
-flour or corn starch instead of Quik-Stop

That's it. The list looks great! :)

You could also add guinea pig shampoo and a 'chew toy' to the list - I got Noah and Elmo a wooden tunnel and they like to gnaw on it sometimes

also maybe this list could be expanded to other methods of care, like what to do with the supplies - e.g how to bathe your guinea pig, how to cut their nails, a feeding guide, that sort of thing

@iamsnape, that's a GREAT idea! That'll be too big for this thread, though... I'll start it, if I get around to it ever... :D Here's the UPDATED list:

Cage:

  • Grids (9 holes in 14 inches)
  • Coroplast OR shower curtain
  • 4 inch Cable Ties

  • Food dishes (1 per pig)
  • Water Bottle(s)
  • Cozies
  • TOYS!
  • Carrier for Vet Visits, Emergencies, and Travel

  • Grooming Supplies
  • Weight Scale and Note Book for Tracking Weight
  • Dawn Dish Soap and Mineral Oil (for cleaning grease glands on boars)
  • Small Animal Shampoo (NEVER GET CAT/ DOG SHAMPOOS! They're not made for animals that clean themselves like pigs do)

Food/Hay

  • QUALITY Pellets(Oxbow, KMS, Sweet Meadow are all great brands)
  • Grass Hay (timothy, orchard, bluegrass, etc) from Oxbow, KMS, Sweet Meadow, or a local farmer is preferable to pet store brands
  • Veggies: for a great list of pig safe veggies, go here:https://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...ants-list.html

Cleaning:

  • Litter Scoop
  • 50/50 Water/ Vinegar Spray
  • Dust Pan and Brush OR Hand Vac

I hope that this is everything! If I missed anything, please feel free to let me know so that I can make edits! Please also let me know if this was useful!

I don't recommend the 4" cable ties. They aren't strong enough and break. I tried them. Use the 8", 75 lb. strength cable ties. The cage will be a lot sturdier.

Thanks, @pinky. I will definitely change that next time I edit the list.

great list this will be very helpful for the newbies!

there are lots of alternatives to grids. some people use wire shelving, some build alternative cages with wood and plexiglass, etc.

This list is GREAT. Very helpful. Thank you for posting this for us newbies on here.

Thanks, @Lovemypiggys, @piggi_zone and @jacqueline! My hope is that it'll become a "Sticky Thread"!!!! That's my goal for the site, other than reaching 1,000 posts! :D

I will definitely add some alternatives to cubes (probably just wire shelving and wood/Plexiglas) once I get another idea or two for the list.

Could you please put coconut oil alongside where you put the soap and mineral oil? I only use natural alternatives where the choice exists: coconut oil is my choice for boars glands etc cleaning.

good idea with the thread!

It's a shame writing a Guinea Pig Cages Forum Members: The Complete Care Guide would take too long, would be a great little project for everyone to contribute to lol never know one day we could all be part of a book!

@KiwiCavyAdorer I can certainly add it! The new list will be posted in about 3 minutes!
