Adopting Wanting to adopt - long haired pigs?

First of all where is the preferred place to adopt pigs? I don't have any friends anymore that have cavvys or know of anyone that's selling. I've went to some pet shops like locally owned pet shops and we love pets, but I must find out where they get their pigs, though I do know some breed them themselves.

I have a abyssinian that I love, I like the spiked hair that goes in different directions. For a long time I've wanted a long haired guinea pig, I would have the time for clipping hair, grooming, etc. I've looked in a lot of petshops and haven't seen one, I didn't know if you would have to get them from a special breeder? If this is the case, how much do they cost? I also like peruvians that have messy hair, like abyssinians, but I can't be too picky at this point.

Please don't buy from shops or breeders.

Look on petfinder.com for local rescue and shelter.

You can also look on Craigslist but don't buy from a breeder. There are a lot of guinea pigs being rehomed that need a second chance at a forever home.

But that still leaves a remaining question, are Peruvians a uncommon/more expensive breed? Will it be hard to find a rescue Peruvian?

For where I live, Peruvians aren't rare or more expensive...in fact the last one surrendered into the rescue was rescued after being let go on the street.

Am glad you're going the rescue way...we just had 24 rescued guineas brought to us...6 of them are pregnant or pregnant and nursing females, 8 are babies...and it all started with just 2 and people thinking breeding them would be a good way to make money....while the babies are a cute sight..It also saddens me very much as there are so many homeless ones..

I would just keep looking, you don't need a Peruvian so there isn't any rush.
Trust me, the perfect guinea will come your way...it just all requires patience.

You can find a lot of long haired pigs on Craigslist. I see a lot of people who don't want to have to groom them after awhile. My baby boy Logan is a Abyssian/Himalayan cross and is somewhat long haired. And my new pup Jake is a pure Himalayan and he's another long haired. Logan is from a person who was getting rid of her bucks, and Jake is from the same person who had an unplanned litter and doesn't have room for him

I would say one factor is that it depends on your area and how far your willing to drive. If you really want one badly enough and are willing to drive a few hours, then you have a greater possibilities of getting one. You could also consider going to the next state over if the shelter allowed it. (Some shelters don't allow you to adopt within a certain radius, but sometimes will make exceptions) It also depends on if you want a Peruvian specifically, or just a long haired breed. There are other breeds and half-breeds that still have long hair.

When adopting a long haired breed from a shelter, it should be just the same costs. I'm not sure about breeders, though.

Here are a few resources you can search for long haired pigs on. Even if you don't find a long haired guinea pig on any of these sources, you can keep track of them and perhaps there will be one in time.
