To administrators: I attempted to post to previous Rocco thread, but it would not allow with an error message stating it was too old to reply to it. https://www.guineapigcages.com/foru...8-month-male-getting-neutered?highlight=Rocco
Please combine if neceesary. Thank you!
So, Rocco has had a VERY happy life living with his female family after his neutering ordeal. Thank you to everyone who offered reassurance and advice!
He has been a healthy little man up until yesterday when I got him into the vet because I noticed some sniffles, clear nasal drainage and sneezing. He was diagnosed with a mild upper respiratory infection. His breathing was good and lungs clear. He is doing great and on Doxycycline antibiotic. (And bene-bac probiotic). As of right now he is eating, drinking, pooping and running around normally.
The vet took his mild symptoms very seriously also due to the fact we adopted 2 babies almost four weeks ago who were very seriously ill with URI. They have been quarantined in a separate room and are doing tremendously better. You wouldn't know they were ever sick at this point, so we thought we were out of the woods ...but alas my worst fears of getting the others sick came true despite separation and careful sanitation. (These babies are still in a separate room from Rocco and the others).
Because of the weekend approaching and because of the crazy shutdowns of schools, ect. in our area due to COVID-19, my vet gave me extra antibiotic, syringes and dosages for my other guinea pigs who are housed in a large cage with Rocco (yeah, I paid a pretty penny for this big bottle of gold!). She said if they start showing symptoms to start them on the antibiotic immediately. So far only one of his sisters has shown to have some sneezing so she has also started the antibiotic.
My question is: should I watch them closely and start each one separately as I detect symptoms....OR start them all on the antibiotic now?
I am worried I will miss one of them having mild symptoms and not treat them soon enough since URI can be so contagious and devastating...and guinea pigs are so good at hiding illness. But I don't want to overuse antibiotics if they are not needed either.
I would really appreciate any advice, especially from those who have experience with this.
