I realized today that I don't even pay attention to how much I spend on my guinea pig supplies. With three little pigs, I should really start thinking about this! Got a great deal at the grocery store today:

Yellow pepper: $1
Red Leaf Lettuce: $.94
Green beans: $.24
Cilantro: $.50
Roma Tomato: $.23

I'd say I spend about $15 a month on hay, and $10 a month on pellets if I'm not ordering online, which I plan to for my next batch.

So: What do you spend?

I spend about $10 a week on veggies, $14 on hay a month, and about $12 on pellets, but I'm looking to start buying online.

I spend about $15 a week on veggies.
Approx. $30 (including shipping) on pellets every 3 months.
And about $40 on hay (including shipping), although I'm not sure how often as this is the first 20lbs box I've gotten from SPS and it's still a little over half full.

@Aleks how long have you had that hay? I was seriously just about to buy some from SPS, pulling out my debit card and everything. :p

I don't honestly know! A $16 bag of hay lasts me about two months, and a 5 lb bag of pellets lasts me the same about. I have now adopted two more so we will see. I hit up the clearance veggies! Three bell peppers for $1! And I get cucumbers 2/$1. I honestly spend about $15 a month on veggies for my animals, sometimes a bit more.

Umm, I think I probably spend too much on my piggies...but not so much on the cost of food...but probably treats and pre-made fleece products. I wish I knew how to sew then I would at least appear more frugal. My husband pointed out I spend over $600 on the animals during the month of july...but I quickly pointed out that was due larger to having been to the vet so many times that month for Binky's URI and Patsy's fungal...not to mention the cost of flea/heart meds for dogs...my birds and rabbit may be the least expensive...

I pay about 5 dollars a week on vegetables, 10 dollars a month on hay and 10 dollar a month pellets. So about 40 dollars a month.

Hmmm lets see.
$25 / 2 months - Hay
$25 / 6 months - Pellets
$10-$20 / 6 months - Toys

I guess I really don't spend that much... the majority is necessity. The hay I estimate lasts me around 1 1/2 months to 2 months. I like to spoil my pigs a lot though, so I do end up splurging on toys/fabric. :) And my parents usually pay for the veggies for me!

$200 a year on hay/pellets and probably around $50 or so on extras.

Agree!! lol I could care less about how much I spend of their food, with 13 it's best not to try ;) The fleece beds and bedding have totaled WAY more than all the food combined!

For the pigs I spend about $15/month on pellets, $25 every 2 months on hay (order online), and $30 or so on veggies. The bun is another $10/month for pellets, $20 for carefresh, and $10-15 for veggies. They share the hay. I don't even want to know how much I, and my mom, spend on our dogs. One of my bassets is doing chemo right now for lymphoma which is about $150-200/week.

For me, it's worth it. If we didn't spend the money on pets we would spend it on something else not nearly as worth while.

woahwoahwoah.

where do you gets get such cheap pellets, and hay?
a bag of oxbow is 12-15... and I guess I should pay better attention but I want to say I go through one about every 3 Weeks.
Hay is similar, and they go through a bag every 2 weeks.
bedding is 8, I use 2 of those a month.
then there are veggies.

i think I end up spending 75-90$ a month just on the basics.

Are these just crazy American deals? Americans seem to have much better deals on things than Canadians :p

I have gotten my hay free but will have to start paying since my piggies are almost over 6 months. We have an alfalfa hay field but no timothy hay so I found a farmer that is about $3.75 per a pure timothy hay bale and discounts if bought in bulk. So I don't know how much hay is yet. We don't really buy veggies for our animals we have lots of vegetables around because of our garden and I love my veggies so even without a garden they were bought often. :) They always have lettuce and carrots though and lots of bell pepper then a few odds and ends. Most of my money goes towards buying toys my piggies have become quite chewers and I love to buy everything in bulk. I am buying from KMS 50lb. bag of timothy pellets for $32.00 plus shipping.

Seven piggies and this is how we go.
Veggies: $22 bi-weekly (28 peppers, 2 leaf lettuce, tomatoes/cucumbers/carrots are home grown)
Hay: 25lb from KMS every two and a half months (just bought a 45lb box and am guessing it'll last through the new year since I still have over half of a 25lb box left)
Pellets: 10lb from KMS every two and a half months (just bought enough to (hopefully!) get me through the new year as well)

So it comes out to around $40-ish a month. Not including their tunnels, liners, kitchen area pellet litter.
