Re: piece of meat covered in blood found in cage

It's a dead pup.

The sow gets pregnant when a male and female mate. Obviously, one of yours is a male. Turn them both over and look at them carefully.

The sow is probably pregnant again, because she can get pregnant within minutes of giving birth. That's very hard on her, and you need to provide excellent veggies, good hay, and supplemental vitamin C to get her through this.

@bpatters i just saw.its a dead pup. one of them is a male. how ****ed up my vet could be. every month he checks them and he says they are female. the pet store owner said both r female. i m devasted and heartbroken. and the male guinea pig(rufus) killed the pup. i m feeling terrible. and i saw them mating few minutes back. i think i should seperate them. one cage is smaller though. which one should go in the smaller one?

Didn't it ever occur to you to turn them over and look at them?

I doubt the male killed the pup. That happens very occasionally, but it's not usually the case with guinea pigs.

Was the pup even out of the sac?

And yes, they should be permanently separated, and you need to provide a cage large enough for each of them. Put a lid on the female's cage. The male can push up a lid on his own cage, but he can't lift a lid to get into the sow's cage.

Is the vet cavy savvy? Dog and cat vets normally are not. You can post your location city/state not actual address, and some of the members close to you can tell you the vet they use. Otherwise, there is a list of cavy savvy vets on Guinea Lynx.

Are your guinea pigs hairless? If they aren't then there were issues with the pup as guinea pig pups are born fully furred, if that is the case then it is likely it was simply a stillborn and it isn't unheard of for mothers to begin to eat stillborn pups while attempting to clean them off.

Yes separate them immediately, I would put the male into the smaller cage for now.

ETA: joeyandrufus lives in India, so I don't think they really have many options when it comes to vets, let alone exotic specialising vets.

@bpatters i have turned around and looked. it has always appeared the same to me. A professional vet couldn't figure out,nor the breeders from whom i bought. I trusted them. i clicked a picture again to really see if it was a baby. its very saddening. it made me cry. rufus(male) ripped his neck(my maid said she saw it and she thought it was an apple)(wouldnt blame her, shes uneducated and simple. she has no idea, she thinks guinea pigs are rabbit) but you are experienced, you could be right. it could be joey too(female) so now the thing is how can i trust joey? what if she kills her baby again? i have seperated them, but the male has to get neutered so that i can keep them together.

@Soecara my guinea pigs are not hairless, they are furry. the pup was hairless although it had little hair on his head. i clicked a picture again to really see if it was a baby. its very saddening. it made me cry.

It's extremely rare for a guinea pig sow to injure a pup. Sometimes it will happen when an inexperienced mother accidentally bites the pup trying to get the sac off. My theory, and I have nothing to support this, is that it's more likely to happen when the pup is already dead (as in your case) and isn't moving around. With a live pup, it's moving in the sac while the mom is trying to get the sac off, so it's less likely to stay in one position and get badly injured. It might get nipped in a couple of places, but not in just one.

And like @Soecara, I think something was wrong with this pup from the beginning. I doubt that it was even born alive.

I think Joey is fine, so if she is pregnant, don't worry about her. The bigger likelihood is that there was something genetically wrong with the pup that could occur again, but you'll just have to wait and see.
