I need someone in the tri state area of New York to give a really good home to our 2 guinea pigs. We just found that that our daughter has asthma and is very allergic to her guinea pigs. We are not asking for anything but a good home. They will come with a C&C cage and all the food and bedding. Please if anyone is interested let me know. They are both 2 sweet girls and we hate to give them up but have no choice. You can also email me at [email protected] if you like to see pictures. I tried to upload them here but I'm having a hard time

Jenna, before you give them up, try switching to orchard grass. I have asthma and have 5 guinea pigs and suffer no allergy symptoms unless I use timothy hay. Guinea pigs are rarely the cause of the allergic reactions. Timothy hay is usually the culprit.

Are you sure your daughter is allergic to the pigs themselves, and not just the hay? Many people are allergic to timothy hay but find that they're fine with orchard grass.

We took her to a allergy specialist, she allergic to them, believe me I don't want to do this, my heart is broken right now but I live in fear every day about her asthma. I don't have asthma and nor does anyone in my family so this is my first time dealing with something like this. They are so sweet I don't want to give them up but I'm left with no choice

I agree with @pinky and @pigger123, I have allergic reactions plus asthma to all animals with fur except for guinea pigs. I'm very allergic to Timothy hay but the orchard hay and the KMS bluegrass hay don't bother me at all.

I took her to a allergy specialist and they said she's allergic to rats but they didn't actually test for guinea pigs but I'm thinking they are in the same family right? I have no idea, I keep trying to do research but there is no one telling me if it's the same thing. I'm going to run to the pet store today and see if anything changes, I don't know what else to do. But we are all sneezing and getting worst.

Guinea pigs are pretty non-allergenic animals. I understand your concern about the asthma, but it might be worth trying a different kind of hay and see if that's the culprit. Timothy hay gives some people fits.

If you're testing to see if hay is the culprit make sure you clean the cage well and bathe the guinea pigs then introduce the new hay to see if it solves the problem. I know my one roommate was allergic to my timothy hay last year, I switched to orchard grass during the summer and she no longer has any issues.

Also, guinea pigs and rats are very different animals, personally I'm allergic to hamsters but my 4 pigs don't bother me at all. I definitely think it's worth trying new hay before you rehome them!

I was using wood shaving from carefresh and I threw that away and switch back to the 100 percent dust free paper bedding from carefresh, I cleaned out the cageimage.jpg and bought the orchard grass. I'm hoping this does the trick, I will keep everyone posted I guess I'll give it a week to see if there is any changes.

Rats cause more allergies than most other animals, so your daughter can very well be allergic to them but not to piggies. Hope the hay change helps!

Bathe the pigs, too, to get all the hay dust off them. You can use Squeaky Clean critter shampoo -- it's readily available most everywhere.

They don't have guniea pig shampoo here in nyc but I did see dry shampoo but I've never taken them a bath, I don't know how they would react to that

Squeaky clean is definitely available at some pet store in NYC. They won't like the bath but it won't hurt them. Dry shampoo isn't recommended as it stays on their fur and they can ingest it while grooming themselves

Non-medicated kitten shampoo will work too. ;) That may be easier to find.

Rywen thank you so much for sharing that, I was thinking it was the same thing because they are in the rodent family.

I'm very allergic to rabbits too. I'm not sure why I'm not allergic to guinea pigs but I'm super glad that I'm not!

My mum is allergic to Guinea Pigs but not rats, mice or rabbits. I'm allergic to cats, Timothy Hay and Sawdust shavings. (Also, hi, I'm Nicole from your post on Guinea Pig Advice and Support). Are you or your daughter on any type of anti-histamine? Have you considered a HEPA filter for the pig room? HEPA filters are also really good for people with just regular asthma so it might be something to consider.
