    General: Re: Pregnancy Question

The biggest question is how large the cage is. Crowded quarters will cause the adults to nibble the pups' ears.

I'm more concerned about the presence of the boar than of the other sows. If you...

Nutrition: Re: Thoughts on my feeding schedule?

It looks complicated to me. That's an awful lot of scheduling for a few fruits and veggies. And ultimately, you're going to wind up with produce going bad before the pigs can get it eaten.

    Most...

    Dominance: Re: Three Boar Bullying

There's plenty of information on male guinea pigs living together. Googling "can three male guinea pigs live together" will get you a ton of hits.

Hay: Re: I've had it with Oxbow hay

You can buy 40 pounds of American Pet Diner or SPS for about twice that. Even if you wound up throwing half of it away, it would still be cheaper than that!
  5. Conditions: Re: Sometimes I can hear moaning / whimpering coming out of the cage..what could it m

I wouldn't worry about it. They're not silent animals, and they may just be complaining to each other. It's not a sign of a UTI. If they're acting normally and maintaining their weight, just keep...

URI: Re: Stubborn Upper Respiratory Infection

The Baytril should be given orally, with another med put in the nebulizer. And yes, there should be way more than .32 ml of any med in the nebulizer. I can't remember exactly how much I put in,...

    Feet: Re: Gimbly's bumblefoot history

The top link doesn't work. But if you can smell ammonia, that's definitely a possible cause of the bumblefoot.

But puppy pads often have a deodorizing agent in them, and that could also affect...

    Feet: Re: Gimbly's bumblefoot history

Good info on bumblefoot over at GL: https://guinealynx.info/pododermatitis.html

What kind of bedding is in the kitchen? If it's not fleece, it might help to put fleece down over it.

    As far as...

URI: Re: Stubborn Upper Respiratory Infection

The chamber is really easy. I used a plastic box about 10x12 inches with walls about 12 inches high. I just ran the tube from the nebulizer down in it, put the pig and some veggies in, and laid a...

    Bonding: Re: Aunt with babies?

If your cage is large enough and after the babies are six weeks old or so, you can put all the females together. If you separate two sows for one of them to give birth, you have to wait a while...

URI: Re: Stubborn Upper Respiratory Infection

If you can get hold of a nebulizer (some vets lend them out), you can make a breathing chamber with a plastic box and a thick towel over it. Gentamycin given via nebulizer will be much more...

I wouldn't do anything about his teeth until something tells you, besides the vet opinion, that they're giving him trouble.

    Feet: Re: Gimbly's bumblefoot history

It definitely looks fungal. You could try a topical antifungal a couple of times a day for several days and see if that makes any difference.

Google "ringworm" and click on Images. You'll see...

  16. Aggression: Re: Is it possible for a Guinea pig to never get along with others?

First, you never introduce in a cage. You do it in a large, neutral area following an established set of guidelines, and then you put them back into a thoroughly cleaned cage that smells nothing...
  17. Conditions: Re: Pain and hard sides while pooping. Vet solution not working?

The only other thing I can suggest is an ultrasound. It might show some soft tissue abnormality that the x-ray couldn't.
  18. Conditions: Re: Pain and hard sides while pooping. Vet solution not working?

Complaining while pooping is a classic sign of stones.

Was this an exotic vet you saw? Sometimes an inexperienced vet can miss a stone, and I'm not at all sure what an x-ray with contrast is in...

Injury: Re: Guinea Pig Got Bit on Nose - bleeding

No, there's really nothing to do. If you put an antibiotic cream on it, she'd just lick it off, and that's not a good thing.

I'm sure it itches, like all healing wounds. Do keep a close eye and...

Injury: Re: Guinea Pig Got Bit on Nose - bleeding

You should just watch carefully, and if you see any signs of infection (redness, swelling, oozing, odor, etc.) then get her to a vet.

FYI, it's not necessary to separate sows when one is pregnant....

Re: New & would like advice on adoption

    Ditto 4boipigs. Good advice.

When introducing one pig to a group, be sure to give it LOTS of time and don't rush the process. Make sure they're thoroughly worn out before putting them in the...
  22. Conditions: Re: Lil guinea has peeling feet & crusty eyes. :'(

You could try a different bedding and see if that makes a difference. And keep the cage very clean. Watch to make sure that doesn't sleep in an area she's chosen for a toilet -- that can cause all...
  23. Bonding: Re: Recently took on special needs piggy, already have a pair. Input?

I hate to be the one to tell you, but a trio of boars is almost certainly destined to fail. Two works OK, large groups sometimes work OK, but a trio, especially when introducing a single pig to a...
  24. Lump: Re: Might be a tumor, but it seems odd, anyone else see this before?

Then I'd take in for a vet visit. Be sure to see an exotic vet -- small animal vets treat dogs and cats, not pocket pets, and some of them are downright dangerous.
  25. Lump: Re: Might be a tumor, but it seems odd, anyone else see this before?

It looks to me like a small benign cyst -- maybe a seborrheic keratosis or, less likely, a trichofolliculoma. Is it completely on the skin, or is there a lump underneath?
