General: Re: Every guinea pig owner needs to know!!!

    Creativeguinea, welcome to the forum.

Just as a suggestion, we probably have several thousand posts on those topics on this forum. You might want to read a little to see what's here.

    Hay: Re: Best Hay?

I've thought about it. But after my husband died, I'd planned to do some traveling, and that's really hard to do because I don't have anyone to look after the pigs. Had I known the coronavirus was...

    Hay: Re: Best Hay?

I'm betting this is going to be a bad hay year in the west. A weather prediction I saw this morning says Texas will be the driest it's been in 1000 years.

The quality of hay is more a function of...

    Re: Pandemic Class Pet Piggie

Actually, romaine is no higher in calcium than the other lettuces. But in some pigs, it causes excess calcium excretion. Others are not bothered. Cilantro can do the same thing.
  5. Grooming: Re: Need to do a boar cleaning on flighty pig

The scent marking glands are in the sac.

You'll just have to catch your pig. You need to be handling him every day anyway.

Here's our video on sac cleaning:...

    General: Re: New to males

They can squabble a lot as they go through puberty.

But honestly, even assuming schools are open this fall, I don't think I'd have a pet in the classroom. There's just a ton we don't know about...

Chewing: Re: Can Guinea pigs chew on Amazon box's

I never worried about mine nibbling cardboard, but they also never just outright ate it. I wouldn't give them a steady supply of it, but putting a box in occasionally shouldn't hurt.

    General: Re: Best/worst pellet brands?

The only pellets we recommend in this country are KMS Hayloft and Oxbow.
  9. Sick: Re: advice needed for multiple symptoms in all 3 piggies

You need a good exotic vet, ASAP. All of those symptoms are very worrying, and diarrhea is a major emergency in guinea pigs.

Let us know what the vet says.

Ditto Soecara. Just watch it. If you notice more, see http://www.guinealynx.info/fungus.html for some recommendations on shampoo to use.

Sexing: Re: I'm..not sure if its a girl.?

Glad you got it figured out!

Just be sure to keep them separated for four weeks after his surgery. Also, be sure to find an exotic vet who's done GP neuters before. They're a little different...

Sexing: Re: I'm..not sure if its a girl.?

Your thumb is too far up. Put it just above the genital opening.

Sexing: Re: I'm..not sure if its a girl.?

The pushing back and forth won't do anything to extrude the penis -- that's just for feeling the bone in it.

To extrude the penis, put your thumb right at the top of the genitalia, and push down...

Sexing: Re: I'm..not sure if its a girl.?

If it's a male, you should be able to feel the penis bone if you put your finger crosswise his body, just above the genitalia. Push down and back and forth, and you should be able to feel the bone...

    Supplements: Re: Vitamin C Question

The only info I can find says there are 250 mg. of vitamin C in 5 ml. of solution. That means there are 50 mg. in 1 ml. So if you want to give 25 mg., give .5 ml.

    Supplements: Re: Vitamin C Question

I can't read those labels, but if the pig is getting pellets with stabilized vitamin C as well as veggies with C, I wouldn't give more than 25 mg per day, and for no longer than a week.

    The bottle...

Weight Loss: Re: Adopted severely underweight pigs

Don't push the weight gain. It takes a while for adult pigs to gain weight, and you don't want to induce any possible bladder stone problems by overdoing the pellets. Just make they've got very...

Not much at all of the cabbage -- it can cause bloating. Somewhat more of the broccoli, but still not a lot. The carrots are fine.

Diarrhea: Re: Cause of wet poop?

Diarrhea, or just soft poops? Diarrhea is full-on liquid, and is a much more dangerous situation than just soft/mushy poop.

The usual course of trying to diagnose poop problems is to take them...

Fleece: Re: Need wicking advice ASAP

You need a strong detergent and very hot water. The bleach wouldn't hurt, and may help if you soak the fleece in a bleach solution overnight..

Detergent won't clog the fleece up. It dissolves...
