Re: New Guinea Pig Owner and a Question

    What Guinea Pig Papa said.

Can you take a well-lit, close-up picture of the dots? If they're lice, they're easily treated.

    How old is he?

    Bonding: Re: Fleece Bag

You need to figure out ASAP whether the baby is he or she -- males can impregnate females when they're about four weeks of age, and he'll be happy to service mom if there are no other females around....
  3. Injury: Re: Guinea pig ear torn in half!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

So this is 24 hours. Why haven't you taken him to the vet yet? Would you like to be left with a ripped ear for that long without anything being done about it?
  4. Injury: Re: Guinea pig ear torn in half!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

You can get him to a vet for pain meds. He's your responsibility to take care of, and that means medical care as well as food and bedding.

Frustrated: Re: Found abandoned guinea pigs

You've got houses with only one door, right? Those are a big no-no in a guinea pig pen. They're just invitations for one pig to trap another and get its face slashed in the process.

    Either cut...

    Weight Loss: Re: Weight Loss

Generally, senior pigs will lose a little, plateau for a while, lose a little more, plateau again, rinse and repeat. They don't metabolize food as efficiently as they did when they were younger, so...

Bullying: Re: Introductions are not going well!

Did you wash all the fabric and all the hideys? Water bottles? Food dishes?

Have you taken all the hideys out and draped fleece strategically across the cage to break up the lines of sight? It...

Bullying: Re: Introductions are not going well!

How long are you leaving them in the neutral area?

Are you cleanig EVERYTHING in the cage so that nothing smells anything at all like either pig?

Do all the hideys have two doors?

    Books: Re: Detailed piggy books?

Every book I know of has some major flaw to it -- misinformation about diet, cage size, medications, etc. And anything "scientific" about guinea pigs is apt to be focused on medical research.

How Many: Re: Trying to sort a herd

Multiple boars won't work if there's a sow in the midst. I think you'd be better off to wait until your boar has passed on and then let your sow pick out a potential mate from a rescue.

Cage: Re: Looking for bulk litter for guinea pigs

Wood pellets. Hands down the cheapest, and best for odor control.

Bathing: Re: How To Bathe Guinea Pig?

You don't want waterless shampoo. I'm not in favor of using that for any animal that grooms itself unless there's some huge reason the animal can't get wet.

Where are you that you can't find...
  15. Crusty Eyes: Re: What is this white around my guinea pig eyes?

Can you get a closer, better lit picture? It may be hair loss from fungus, but I can't tell from that photo.

  17. Crusty Eyes: Re: What is this white around my guinea pig eyes?

I can't tell from the picture. Is the white stuff around her eye, or on the eyeball?

If it's on the eyeball, t could be osseous metaplasia. It doesn't bother the pig, and there's nothing to be...

Bathing: Re: How To Bathe Guinea Pig?

If you use a baby wipe, dip the pig's butt in warm water and rinse it well. There are perfumes and oils in baby wipes that you don't want the pig to ingest when it's grooming itself.

Bathing: Re: How To Bathe Guinea Pig?

Squeaky Clean Critter Shampoo is a good choice, and is usually widely available. Just be sure to rinse her well and dry her completely before putting her back in the cage.

    But I'd also check into...

  22. Re: I’m babysitting a rabbit and I have some questions

Bordatella is the organism that rabbits can carry that can infect guinea pigs. I wouldn't let them meet.

Feet: Re: Swollen ankle: Chocolate’s med thread

You posted six hours after I asked you but didn't mention the nits.

If they're stuck to the hair shaft, they're definitely lice. Treat them all.
