    Hay: Re: Orchard Grass

Any long strand (which does NOT mean it has a long stem) grass hay is fine -- timothy, brome, and the three grasses (meadow, hay and orchard).

    Re: Nibbler's Medical Thread

Blood and mucous is a sign of gut disturbance, maybe infection or a parasite or a bacterial imbalance. I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with blood.

    Simethicone may help him, and...
  3. Conditions: Re: Sudden paralysis of hind legs in a young female? (Cappucicno's med thread)

Don't continue the high doses of vitamin C longer than 7-10 days. After that, cut back to about 25 mg. per day plus some bell peppers.
  4. Conditions: Re: Sudden paralysis of hind legs in a young female? (Cappucicno's med thread)

Doesn't matter, as long as she gets 100 mg. a day for several days. But either watch her or hold her while she eats them so you can make sure she's getting all of it every time.

  6. Conditions: Re: Sudden paralysis of hind legs in a young female? (Cappucicno's med thread)

They only have 25 mg. of vitamin C per tablet. You'd have to give her four and make sure she ate all of them.

    Re: My three boys :)

Cute pigs! But you need to know that a group of three males very, very rarely is successful. Two can live together, and sometimes a whole herd can, but three is usually jinxed.

    They need a BIG...

Pellets: Re: Sherwood pet health guinea pig pellets

I'm not a big fan of Sherwood products. Their first pellets, which they promoted heavily, were made from alfalfa, even for adult pigs. They were really high in calcium, and the guy who developed...
  9. Conditions: Re: Sudden paralysis of hind legs in a young female? (Cappucicno's med thread)

Then I would give her 100 mg of vitamin C per day for 7-10 days. If you don't see improvement in that time, the problem isn't a lack of C.

You can use Vita Drops liquid vitamin C, or a plain...
  10. Conditions: Re: Sudden paralysis of hind legs in a young female? (Cappucicno's med thread)

It may well be a vitamin C deficiency. That's the most common cause of hind leg weakness/paralysis.

What exactly do you feed her?

What kind of hay, and how much?

    What brand of pellets,...
  11. How Much?: Re: Pig is finishing all his pellets every day. Should I be giving him more?

How old is he? If he's less than 6 months old, he needs unlimited pellets. After six months, 1/8 cup is the right amount.

BUT, he needs food ALL the time. He should have unlimited hay,...

Nutrition: Re: Thoughts on my feeding schedule?

In some pigs, but not in all, romaine (and sometimes cilantro) causes excess calcium excretion. That's been anecdotally linked to an increased incidence of bladder stones, although there have been...

Fleece: Re: Newbie Questions on Fleece liners

Just a point of clarification here, Ashlynn and escapay. You don't wick the fleece. You strip the fleece of a covering so that it will wick when liquid is on it. Wicking is the process of pulling...

    Bonding: Re: retry bonding?

I'd try again after the babies are older, maybe eight weeks. Use a very large neutral space, Put the lone pig in it first, then one pup at a time every two or three minutes, then the mom.

    Here's...

    General: Re: Pregnancy Question

The biggest question is how large the cage is. Crowded quarters will cause the adults to nibble the pups' ears.

I'm more concerned about the presence of the boar than of the other sows. If you...

Nutrition: Re: Thoughts on my feeding schedule?

It looks complicated to me. That's an awful lot of scheduling for a few fruits and veggies. And ultimately, you're going to wind up with produce going bad before the pigs can get it eaten.

    Most...

Hay: Re: I've had it with Oxbow hay

You can buy 40 pounds of American Pet Diner or SPS for about twice that. Even if you wound up throwing half of it away, it would still be cheaper than that!
  21. Conditions: Re: Sometimes I can hear moaning / whimpering coming out of the cage..what could it m

I wouldn't worry about it. They're not silent animals, and they may just be complaining to each other. It's not a sign of a UTI. If they're acting normally and maintaining their weight, just keep...
