    Sick: Re: Help !!!!!!

Looks like the beginnings of cheilitis to me. The quicker you start treating it, the easier it is to cure.

    See http://www.guinealynx.info/cheilitis.html.

Lump: Re: small bump on guinea pig back leg

    A closer-up, better-lit photo would help.

It could be a wart, a sebaceous cyst, a lymphoma, or any number of other things. Only a vet would be able to tell you for sure. But lumps like that are...
  3. Lethargy: Re: Guinea pig with arthritis, loss of appetite and play mate

Overgrown incisors can be caused because the teeth aren't in quite the proper position in the jaw. Nothing necessarily "happened" to cause it.
ItsaZoo's right in that you absolutely need to hand...
  4. Aggression: Re: 3yo sisters show aggressive, dominance-like behavior with blood :( help please

Just to be clear, that's not a bloody spot from a bladder infection -- those are pinkish because the blood is diluted with urine.

And Smileandnod is right, those spots are the center of the abby...
  5. Aggression: Re: 3yo sisters show aggressive, dominance-like behavior with blood :( help please

The hair loss in itself is nearly a guarantee of ovarian cysts. As Smileandnod says, non-exotic vets know little to nothing about exotic pets, and it sounds to me like your vet didn't recognize the...

Size: Re: Is a 4x4 C&C cage good for 3 males?

Good choice! Keep us posted on how you and they are doing!
  8. Diet: Re: I have accidentally been feeding my guinea pigs iceberg lettuce!!

It isn't toxic. It's just like eating crunchy water -- there's no nutrition in it.

Red or green leaf lettuce is much better. Avoid romaine, because some pigs excrete excess calcium in the urine...

    Aggression: Re: seperating guinea pig

Not as long as he's next door to the female. You might move him to the other side of the room and see if that helps.
  10. Lethargy: Re: Guinea pig with arthritis, loss of appetite and play mate

Meloxicam IS bad for the kidneys, but arthritis is bad for life! There's no fixing the arthritis.

IMO, living in pain is pretty terrible. With my Mocha, the vet and I made the choice to give her...
  11. Aggression: Re: 3yo sisters show aggressive, dominance-like behavior with blood :( help please

I'd take the aggressive one to the vet for a general check-up and an ultrasound to see if she has ovarian cysts.

    Aggression: Re: seperating guinea pig

No, being in the other cage does not make him impatient and aggressive. His hormones do that, and would do so even if he were in with the other pigs. It will help if you move his cage to another...
  13. Lethargy: Re: Guinea pig with arthritis, loss of appetite and play mate

Meloxicam is not an instant pain reliever as much as it is an anti-inflammatory. Reducing the inflammation reduces the pain. And it can work well for arthritis alone -- I had a senior guinea pig...

Size: Re: Is a 4x4 C&C cage good for 3 males?

    Probably 20 square feet.

But you still don't have much of a chance of making this work. I'd strongly recommend two cages with two pigs in each rather than trying to build a herd.

Dominance: Re: Sows Exhibiting Dominance Behaviors

Have you turned them over and compared their private parts to be sure they're both female? All pigs rumblestrut, but generally males are more insistent about it, or sows with ovarian cysts. But...
  16. Abscess: Re: Poptart's MedicalThread: Abcess under chin

Do keep removing the scab to flush it. It will heal from the inside out, and when there's solid tissue under the scab instead of a hole, you can stop flushing.

Size: Re: Is a 4x4 C&C cage good for 3 males?

@Candalala is right -- you can't put multiple males with females, but one male with several females is fine.

And by a large herd I mean five or more, but you need LOTS of room for that many males...

Nutrition: Re: Young pellets or adult pellets

Sure. But not much. It has about four times as much calcium as parsley, but also a ton of vitamin A.

Nutrition: Re: Young pellets or adult pellets

Yep. Just give them a spring of parsley per day until they're about six months old.

Size: Re: Is a 4x4 C&C cage good for 3 males?

The cage is large enough, but three males living together fails about 99.98% of the time. Two will probably work, a large herd might work, but three? It's a recipe for disaster, and we never...
  21. Behavior: Re: Guinea pig has watery eye with crust around it and appears tired!

She may have a blocked tear duct. You can massage her lower eyelid, very very very gently, wiping from the center of the eye toward the nose. Use a warm damp cloth. Do this a couple of times a day...

    Re: Cyst

We'd have to know whether it was a cyst or an abscess to have any idea of what to do. And whether there was a sac that was removed.
  23. Abscess: Re: Poptart's MedicalThread: Abcess under chin

    Good for you.

If it scabs over, you can soak the scab with a warm damp cloth and then pick it off. It's very important that it heal from the inside out.
  24. Abscess: Re: Poptart's MedicalThread: Abcess under chin

There's a section on this page about abscesses: http://www.guinealynx.info/common_mistakes.html.

I'd say it's critically important to flush them. You can get a free 10 cc. syringe from most...

    Diarrhea: Re: Poop problems/ Diarrhea?

Food passes through a pig's system in 24-36 hours. Slimy poop is a sign of digestive upset, but if she's eating and drinking normally, I'd give her a probiotic. You can get Bene-Bac from Amazon if...
