How Much?: Re: Critical Care Question

You'll have to ask the vet about the cost. Procedure costs vary widely across the country, and even within the same city. But some vets do lower the costs when a pig will require repeated planings....

Genitals: Re: Uncomfortable When Using Bathroom?

You can't feel stones in a sow unless they're in the very short urethra. If they're up in the bladder, no way.

    Infection: Re: Possible mites?

All guinea pigs have a bald spot behind their ears. Is the pig scratching it?

    Water: Re: Water Choices

It probably won't hurt them for a day, but I wouldn't give it on a regular basis.

General: Re: I'm not quite sure what's happening

Are you just seeing loose hair all over the cage, or are there places on the guinea pig where the hair is definitely thin? Because guinea pigs normally shed a lot of hair.

    Injury: Re: Sprained hind leg

Do the full introductions when you put them back together. I had two sows who were litter mates. One had surgery to remove a bladder stone, and I confined her in one end of the cage. I thought I...

    Injury: Re: Sprained hind leg

He needs to be confined to a smaller place where the other pigs can't hassle him and where his leg has time to heal. You could section off a small area of the cage with grids, or put him in a small...

    Re: Guiny's Medical Thread

hsepur, please do not hijack a thread. Your pig's medical condition has nothing to do with the names of guinea pigs. This will be your pig's medical thread, but in the future, start a new thread...

    Sick: Re: Help !!!!!!

Looks like the beginnings of cheilitis to me. The quicker you start treating it, the easier it is to cure.

    See http://www.guinealynx.info/cheilitis.html.

Lump: Re: small bump on guinea pig back leg

    A closer-up, better-lit photo would help.

It could be a wart, a sebaceous cyst, a lymphoma, or any number of other things. Only a vet would be able to tell you for sure. But lumps like that are...
  12. Lethargy: Re: Guinea pig with arthritis, loss of appetite and play mate

Overgrown incisors can be caused because the teeth aren't in quite the proper position in the jaw. Nothing necessarily "happened" to cause it.
ItsaZoo's right in that you absolutely need to hand...
  13. Aggression: Re: 3yo sisters show aggressive, dominance-like behavior with blood :( help please

Just to be clear, that's not a bloody spot from a bladder infection -- those are pinkish because the blood is diluted with urine.

And Smileandnod is right, those spots are the center of the abby...
  14. Aggression: Re: 3yo sisters show aggressive, dominance-like behavior with blood :( help please

The hair loss in itself is nearly a guarantee of ovarian cysts. As Smileandnod says, non-exotic vets know little to nothing about exotic pets, and it sounds to me like your vet didn't recognize the...

Good choice! Keep us posted on how you and they are doing!
  17. Diet: Re: I have accidentally been feeding my guinea pigs iceberg lettuce!!

It isn't toxic. It's just like eating crunchy water -- there's no nutrition in it.

Red or green leaf lettuce is much better. Avoid romaine, because some pigs excrete excess calcium in the urine...

    Aggression: Re: seperating guinea pig

Not as long as he's next door to the female. You might move him to the other side of the room and see if that helps.
  19. Lethargy: Re: Guinea pig with arthritis, loss of appetite and play mate

Meloxicam IS bad for the kidneys, but arthritis is bad for life! There's no fixing the arthritis.

IMO, living in pain is pretty terrible. With my Mocha, the vet and I made the choice to give her...
  20. Aggression: Re: 3yo sisters show aggressive, dominance-like behavior with blood :( help please

I'd take the aggressive one to the vet for a general check-up and an ultrasound to see if she has ovarian cysts.

    Aggression: Re: seperating guinea pig

No, being in the other cage does not make him impatient and aggressive. His hormones do that, and would do so even if he were in with the other pigs. It will help if you move his cage to another...
  22. Lethargy: Re: Guinea pig with arthritis, loss of appetite and play mate

Meloxicam is not an instant pain reliever as much as it is an anti-inflammatory. Reducing the inflammation reduces the pain. And it can work well for arthritis alone -- I had a senior guinea pig...

Size: Re: Is a 4x4 C&C cage good for 3 males?

    Probably 20 square feet.

But you still don't have much of a chance of making this work. I'd strongly recommend two cages with two pigs in each rather than trying to build a herd.

Dominance: Re: Sows Exhibiting Dominance Behaviors

Have you turned them over and compared their private parts to be sure they're both female? All pigs rumblestrut, but generally males are more insistent about it, or sows with ovarian cysts. But...
  25. Abscess: Re: Poptart's MedicalThread: Abcess under chin

Do keep removing the scab to flush it. It will heal from the inside out, and when there's solid tissue under the scab instead of a hole, you can stop flushing.
