Hay: Re: Advice on Orchard Grass Hay

With your biology expertise you gleaned a lot more from that article than I did! I have read about the phosphorus in sodas and calcium loss in bones and teeth. I have in-laws with dentures due to...

Hay: Re: Advice on Orchard Grass Hay

I almost didn’t find this link again, but Oklahoma Coop Extension had nutrition percentages for different grass hay. They list orchard grass having .27% calcium and .34% phosphorus compared to...

Hay: Re: Advice on Orchard Grass Hay

    https://wheeklyreader.wordpress.com/2013/06/25/which-hay-is-for-guinea-pigs/

Here is a link to the article I found regarding orchard grass and timothy. It sounds like the calcium differences are...

    Re: Sweet dreams, Smuckers

I’m so sorry for your loss of Scamp as well as Smuckers. These little ones are prey animals and they hide their illnesses so well that by the time there are symptoms, it may be too late to help them....

Hay: Re: Advice on Orchard Grass Hay

Depending on the cutting, orchard grass can be a little lower in calcium than Timothy. Blood in the urine could indicate stones, so that may be the reason for the orchard grass recommendation.

Re: Forgive me, my old pig

Your little guy was so lucky to have such a good home! The love and care and adventures he experienced with you were wonderful for him. When he passed, most likely due to natural aging, he was with...

    Vet: Re: Annual exam needed?

I’m glad to see this post and get opinions from experienced owners. The last checkup my guinea pig had was at the shelter before I adopted her, so that’s a little more than 2 years. I was feeling...

Hay: Re: Advice on Orchard Grass Hay

The nutritional makeup is almost the same. I have noticed that not only is orchard grass a little softer, but the strands are longer. I buy the blended Timothy and orchard and there seems to be less...
  11. Not Eating: Re: Urgent!! MY PIG IS HOOTING!! Not eating, drinking, moving much.

I would consider this an emergency. He needs to be seen by a vet. Chronic hooting is one of the signs of a heart condition. He is probably struggling just to breath which is why he is not moving...

    Cage: Re: Dog pen cage?

Tile or vinyl flooring would probably work on the wood base. However, I didn’t want the added weight with my setup. The guinea pig cage is on top of a metal dog kennel.

    Tile would have to be...

How Many: Re: Cage mate passed, get another?

There was a similar discussion on another topic regarding adding a buddy for an older pig. A few people recommended that a small stuffed animal for a lone pig seems to be comforting. I have a stuffed...

    Cage: Re: Dog pen cage?

What I have is plywood with a 2x2 edge all the way around, like a frame. I have a grid cage that sits inside the frame. I cover the wood with Tyvek fabric that I cut from a waterproof mattress cover...

Fleece: Re: Is dollar store fleece safe?

I've noticed that the cheaper fleece blankets have a different texture than the better quality ones. Over time they pill and hay sticks in the fleece making it harder to wash. In general, guinea pigs...

Adopting: Re: Names for pair of girl guinea pigs?

We have been watching episodes of the Carol Burnett Show. We just saw the episode with Mr. Tudball and Mrs. Wiggins where Rock Hudson is her love...
  18. Re: Lady has gone on to the other side of the rainbow

My condolences. These little guinea pigs take up a huge place in our hearts. It is obvious that Lady was loved and cared for. Take care of yourself and treasure the memories you shared.
  19. Re: Unplanned adoption, seeking input on my check list

Keeping Cool: Re: Keeping guinea pigs cool in a porch?

The little bugs are most likely fruit flies, which come in with fresh produce. They especially love bananas which are usually kept on the kitchen counter. They may also be fungus gnats which are...

Supplements: Re: Oasis vita c drops

Was she eating peppers previously and now decided against them? If so, I'd take them away for a while, then try again with just one color. I don't know about others, but my guinea pig gets tired of...
  22. Feet: Re: Bella Rose a little red and dry paws and feet

My guinea pig has a few small spurs that I trim from time to time. Her bedding is clean and her feet are a healthy pink color, so it’s not necessarily a dirty environment. I think spurs are also more...

    Biting: Re: Biting

Most times they bite when they feel threatened and have nowhere to run. But they also may bite if you feed them something and the scent is still on your fingers, like green pepper for example. Or...
  24. Nutrition: Re: How much vitamin c is too much? And any effects?

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that does not build up in the body. Excess is just excreted in the urine. Chances are there was no ill effect to your guinea pig.

    General: Re: Vet Trip Tomorrow

If it doesn’t fit on the floor in the front, set it on the back seat. Wrap a couple of bungee cords or ropes around it top to bottom. Slip the seatbelt under the cords and clip it together.
